  • TRACK: Anderson team performs well at Boyle Invitational

    Anderson County track had hoped for a big day in the Boyle County Invitational last Friday. Instead the results were mixed.


    The Anderson boys’ team had a strong showing. “We had some great performances out there on Friday,” said Anderson coach Robert Meacham. “I was very impressed with David Drummer. He set a new personal record with a new height of 10-00 in the pole vault, good enough for fourth place in a good field of vaulters and a full foot over is previous PR.

  • SOFTBALL: Changes in store after debacle

    Call it youth if you want, but Anderson County softball coach called the Lady Bearcats’ play unacceptable after losses to Lexington Catholic and Henry Clay in a double-header played at Lexington Catholic Friday night.

    The three-team affair was put together quickly after rains had washed out a large number of games for all three teams.

    Anderson, now 7-13 on the year, has dropped six straight games.

    The Lady Bearcats blew a 6-1 lead as they fell to Catholic 7-6 in the first game of the evening.

  • White signs with Georgetown

    Anderson County High School senior Jo Jo White signed an NAIA national letter-of-intent to play golf with Georgetown College during a ceremony at the school last Thursday.

    White joins Anderson classmates Marcus Lake and Jacob Flora, both of whom signed with the Tigers earlier in the year. The trio had made a pact to attend the same school to play golf collegiately, if at all possible.

  • Cann named honorable mention All-State

    Anderson County High School freshman Makenzie Cann earned an honorable mention on the Louisville Courier-Journal All-State basketball team, announced in Sunday’s edition. The prestigious team honored in the state’s largest newspaper is selected by the state’s coaches. Coaches are not allowed to vote for players on their teams.

  • Sims to play football at Centre

    Anderson County High School senior Steven Sims has signed a letter of commitment to play football at Centre College. Sims announced his choice of the Danville school during a ceremony at the school last Wednesday.

    “I believe it is the best school in the state,” said Sims, a three-year starter in the line at Anderson. At 6-foot-2 and 280 pounds, Sims expects to play defensive tackle for the Colonels.

    “I visited there and got to meet the coaches. I really liked it,” Sims said.

  • Gustafson signs with St. Catharine

    Anderson County High School senior Katie Gustafson has signed an NAIA national letter of intent to play soccer at St. Catharine College, located in Springfield.

    A defender and mid-fielder as a Lady Bearcat, Gustafson is expected to see action at both sports for the Patriots, who compete in the Mid-South Conference.

    “We like that she played as a defender and that she is versatile,” said St. Catharine coach Paul Patton.

    It does not take long to know what to expect out of Anderson County softball in 2011. Lady Bearcat coach Brian Glass pulls out a roster, then marks a “C” by four names.

    “These are our team captains,” he says. “They are all sophomores.”

    Very young. Very good.

  • BASEBALL PREVIEW: Cats still prowling near top

    With Anderson County set to host Mercer County in Monday’s baseball season opener, it is time to get a quick rundown of the Bearcats from head coach L.W. Barnes.

    “I’ve got no power. I’ve got no speed. And I’ve got no depth in the pitching staff. I do have good defense,” Barnes says.

    No one really believes Barnes, now in his 13th season leading the Bearcat baseball program. Having four regional championships and four runner-up finishes since 2000 will do that, you know.

  • Four Lady Bearcats named to All-Tournament Team

    Anderson County basketball players Destiny Stewart, Sydney Brown, Makenzie Cann and Eriel McKee were named to the All-Eighth Region Tournament team by the region’s coaches. The team was announced following Saturday’s regional championship game at Gallatin County High School.

  • Bearcat baseball alumni invited to play again

    The Anderson County High School baseball program is sponsoring the inaugural Anderson County  Baseball Alumni Game. All former players are invited to come out for the event.

    There will be one 9-inning game pitting the odd year graduates versus the even year graduates. Also on the program will be raffles, door prizes, silent auctions, and much more. All proceeds will benefit the Anderson County High School baseball program.
