Anderson County High School

  • BASEBALL PREVIEW: Cats still prowling near top

With Anderson County set to host Mercer County in Monday’s baseball season opener, it is time to get a quick rundown of the Bearcats from head coach L.W. Barnes.

“I’ve got no power. I’ve got no speed. And I’ve got no depth in the pitching staff. I do have good defense,” Barnes says.

No one really believes Barnes, now in his 13th season leading the Bearcat baseball program. Having four regional championships and four runner-up finishes since 2000 will do that, you know.

  • Four Lady Bearcats named to All-Tournament Team

Anderson County basketball players Destiny Stewart, Sydney Brown, Makenzie Cann and Eriel McKee were named to the All-Eighth Region Tournament team by the region’s coaches. The team was announced following Saturday’s regional championship game at Gallatin County High School.

  • Bearcat baseball alumni invited to play again

The Anderson County High School baseball program is sponsoring the inaugural Anderson County  Baseball Alumni Game. All former players are invited to come out for the event.

There will be one 9-inning game pitting the odd year graduates versus the even year graduates. Also on the program will be raffles, door prizes, silent auctions, and much more. All proceeds will benefit the Anderson County High School baseball program.

    Lady Bearcats at regional tournament

The Anderson County girls' basketball team was to have played Oldham County in the final first-round game of the Eighth Region Tournament Tuesday night after press time for the print edition of The Anderson News. The tournament is being held at Gallatin County High School.  A story and photos from that game is available online at www.theandersonnews.com.

  • Lady Bearcats hold on to district crown

TAYLORSVILLE – All business. Anderson County was all business Friday.
And that meant there would be no funny business in the championship game of the girls’ 30th District Tournament, held at Spencer County High School.

The Lady Bearcats never trailed. They jumped to a quick lead, held off Collins’ best punch then imposed their will enough for a 57-48 win to capture their third straight district title. “It never gets old,” smiled freshman Eriel McKee, who has been a member of all three of those district titles.

  • A season of misfortune for Bearcats

(Editor's note: Anderson News sports editor John Herndon looks back at the just completed season for Anderson County boys' basketball. This article contains his observations and opinions.)

Hall of Fame pitcher Lefty Gomez once said, “I would rather be lucky than good.”
Anderson County basketball, the 2010-2011 edition, can certainly identify with the old New York Yankee.

  • Spencer ousts Anderson from district tourney

TAYLORSVILLE – In the end, Anderson County’s limitations made sure the Bearcats’ post season would end quickly.

Always a few inches too short, the Bearcats had no answer for Spencer County’s Logan Dunbar, who scored 17 points, including what might have been the biggest two points of last Tuesday’s 30th District semi-final.

  • Six Anderson players named All-District

Six members of Anderson County basketball teams were named to the 30th District All-Tournament team last week at Spencer County High School.

Sydney Brown, Eriel McKee, Destiny Stewart and Corrin Robinson were named to the team from the Anderson girls while Lowell Gordon and Logan Woodside were selected from the Anderson boys.

  • Anderson girls draw Oldham in regional tourney

Fresh off their 30th District championship, the Anderson County girls' basketball team drew 29th District runner-up Oldham County in the first round of the Eighth Region Tournament at the regional draw Saturday morning. The game will be the final first round game of the tournament and is set to tip off on Tuesday, March 1 at 7:30 p.m at Gallatin County High School.

Anderson defeated Oldham 79-59 on Dec. 7. The Lady Bearcats also began their march to the Sweet 16 with a win over Oldham in the regional opener last year.

  • Three-peat! Lady Bearcats corral Collins for district title

TAYLORSVILLE -- Anderson County captured its third consecutive 30th District Tournament championship with a 57-48 win over Collins Friday night at Spencer County High School.

The Lady Bearcats never trailed but were not assured of the win until freshman Destiny Stewart sank a pair of free throws with 36.4 seconds to play, giving Anderson a 55-46 advantage. Sophomore Danielle Watson also buried two crucial free throws that put Anderson up 51-43 with 1:31 to play.
