    Even though Anderson County has no chance of winning the top seed in the 30th District Tournament and Shelby County can't break even unless it wins every game from here on out, there is plenty at stake when the Anderson boys host Shelby in the second game of Wednesday's double header.

  • Third quarter blitz buries Lady Bearcats

    South Oldham used a 10-0 run late in the third quarter to post a 73-63 win over Anderson County in a match-up of two of the Eighth Region's top teams Friday night in Crestwood.


    Anderson had erased a 44-38 deficit when Mackenzie Cann and Corrin Robinson connected on 3-pointers but South Oldham responded with a 10-0 blitz over the next 1:40 to take control. Mary Dye, who scored 23 points for South Oldham, bookended the run with a 3-pointer and a steal that ended with a pass to Emily Housley for a layup that made it 54-44.

  • Simon Kenton defeats Anderson

    The scoreboard might have read differently the story line was the same Saturday night.


    Anderson County stayed close but could not close the deal at Simon Kenton. The Pioneers led most of the game but with less than two minutes to play, Anderson was within striking distance, trailing by five points. Simon Kenton made the key plays down the stretch, however, to post a 72=60 win.


    The loss was Anderson's eighth in nine games with the margin being the biggest in the string.

  • Another close one goes against Bearcats

    Experience is nearly always the best teacher, but it is sometimes cruel.


    “I am fine,” Anderson County boys’ basketball coach Glen Drury said Friday after his team dropped a 62-55 decision to visiting South Oldham. “I am fine, but I might not have been when I first started coaching.”


    He’s learned that things happen. He believes that a team can fight through and get better or it can pack things in and start getting ready for the summer.

  • Anderson wrestlers have big day at Danville

    Anderson County’s wrestlers won four of five matches in its pool in the Admiral Duals, held Saturday at Danville High School. The Bearcats defeated Perry County Central, Newport, Boyle County and Harrison County, all by wide margins but fell to highly-regarded Wayne County 51-26.


    In a 68-12 romp past Boyle, Anderson’s only losses were in the 103- and 112-pound classes, where the Bearcats had no wrestlers. Anderson forfeited at 103 due to an injury to Cody Ward.

  • Bearcats lose another squeaker

    Somewhere along the line, something will go right at the end of a basketball game for Anderson County.

    The Bearcats believe that. They have to believe it to fight through a stretch of misfortune that continued through last Tuesday. With the top seed in the 30th District Tournament on the line, the Bearcats came up just short.

    Again.

    For the sixth time in seven games, Anderson was on the wrong end of the score. Each time, the final margin was four points or less. The string continued Tuesday as heavily-favored Spencer County escaped with a 52-48 win on the Bearcats’ home court.

  • Basketball homecoming is Feb. 12

    Anderson County High School will be sponsoring its annual basketball homecoming on Saturday, Feb. 12 when the Bearcats will be taking on Grant County in boys' basketball action.
    The school is asking the local business community get involved as well.

  • Owen rips Lady Bearcats

    Only 28 seconds remained when the bench emptied Saturday afternoon. In high school sports, that is the equivalent of Red Auerbach’s victory cigar.

    And it was the first time a girls’ basketball team had been able to celebrate early at Anderson County in some time.

    Owen, now 13-3, became the first team to beat Anderson on its home court this season with the 57-44 romp. The Rebels are also the first Eighth Region team to beat Anderson anywhere since the 2009 regional final when Simon Kenton routed the Lady Bearcats.

  • Pinning a tourney title in Capital City

    The Anderson County wrestling team pinned the first major tournament championship under Coach Tom Castle on Saturday when the Bearcats won the Capital City Classic at Franklin County High School.

    The Bearcats scored 227 points in the tournament, well ahead of second place Franklin County, which had 183.5. Harrison County came in third with 133.5. In all, 21 teams participated in the tournament.

    Shea Sparrow (125 pounds) and Zach Perry (152) took first place in their respective weight classes while Austin Dillow (135 pounds) and Eric Spencer (145) placed second for the Bearcats.

  • Western Hills outlasts Bearcats

    If Anderson County had its way about things, that 6-9 linked to the Bearcats would be in the height column next to a player or two on the Bearcats’ roster. No way would it be the record of a proud program.

    But reality is reality following the Bearcats’ 60-56 home court loss to Western Hills Friday night.
    Western Hills took the lead late in the third period and never gave it up to post its first win over Anderson since 1991. The Bearcats fought. They clawed. But they simply could not get results.
