  • Hoops teams continue holiday play

    Both Anderson County basketball teams will be in action this week as they close out the December portion of their schedules in central Kentucky tournament play.

    The Lady Bearcats will be in action in the Mercer County Titan Christmas Clash through Thursday, Dec. 30. Anderson was to have played Monticello in the first round on Monday. Due to holiday publishing schedules, that game and a second-round game against Nelson County or Maysville St. Patrick was played after press deadlines for this edition of The Anderson News.

  • Bearcats upset Florida power in McCreary tourney

    Something clicked for Anderson County basketball last week.

    It happened over 100 miles from home, in the obscurity of McCreary County, down along the Tennessee border. And it clicked just when the Bearcats looked like they would be kicked and, perhaps, on the way to a disastrous season.

    No, Anderson did not win the Arby’s/KFC Classic at McCreary Central High School. Far from it. The Bearcats split four games and still were looking at a 3-4 record heading into last night’s game against Lexington Sayre.

  • Three named to all-state football team

    Three members of the Anderson County High School football team were listed as honorable mention selections on The Courier-Journal All-State team, announced in Sunday’s editions of the state’s largest newspaper.

    Offensive lineman Todd DeWoody, defensive lineman Steve Sims and place-kicker Bill Rose were honored in voting by the state’s coaches.

  • Wrestlers to compete in Woodford tournament

    Some of Kentucky's best wrestling teams will be descending on Woodford County High School for the Yellow Jacket Invitational to be held on Monday, Dec. 27 and Tuesday, Dec. 28.
    Anderson County, which has several impressive wrestlers early in the season, will be part of the field.
    In the recent Bearcat Duals, held on Dec. 11, Anderson wrestlers Shea Sparrow (130 pounds), Austin Dillow (135) and Jacob Vincent (145) were undefeated in their respective weight classes.
    T.W. Stockton and Chris McDaniel went 4-1 at 160 and 125 pounds respectively.

  • Bearcats, Lady Bearcats hoping to spread holiday hoops cheer

    The Anderson County High School boys' and girls' basketball teams will continue their busy holiday schedules through next week with both teams looking for big tournament wins.

    The Bearcats were to continue play in the McCreary Central Tournament through Thursday, Dec. 23. Anderson fell to Wayne County on Monday afternoon but was to continue playing in the consolation rounds.
    Next week, the Bearcats will head to Lexington Sayre for the Spartans' Holiday Classic. Anderson will be in a round-robin affair with Harlan County, Somerset and the host school for the three-day event.

  • Turnovers not sweet for Lady Bearcats

    LEXINGTON – Elizabethtown showed why it is considered one of the top girls' basketball programs in Kentucky and that Anderson County has a way to go before it is considered in the elite Monday afternoon.
    The Lady Panthers dominated the final three quarters to score a 58-47 victory in the Republic Bank Classic at Lexington Catholic High School.

  • Third quarter run propels Mercer past Anderson

    Anderson County has known all along that the current basketball season would be a work in progress.
    Mercer County showed why Friday night as the Titans used a 12-0 run in the third quarter to break open a tie game on the way to a 60-43 win over host Anderson.
