In this week's Anderson News, I ranked my top five sports stories that affected or impacted Anderson County this year. Like any time someone undertakes such a project there will be disagreements on what should and should not be on the list or how the ones I ranked should be ranked.

Wednesday sports update

Not a lot going on right now locally, so it might be a good time to look around the area at some things happening.
First, in high school football, no one predicted Anderson County would have an easy time winning a district title for the second consecutive season. The Bearcats were realigned into a district that includes East Jessamine, which has had a solid program for some time, and Franklin County, which has enough speed that the Flyers are a threat to beat anyone.
Everyone who follows Kentucky high school football knew those two teams would be good.

Anderson County showed a glimpse of why the Bearcats and their fans are excited about the 2011 football season Friday night. Anderson defeated Danville 41-35 in a scrimmage at Admiral Stadium.

You read that right. Anderson defeated perennial state power Danville in a scrimmage.

The scrimmage was only three quarters with the clock running before the junior varsity teams went at it for two sets of 10 plays each. Anderson won that segment, too, three touchdowns to one.

Controversy surrounding John Calipari is about as predictable as the sun coming up in the east. Kentucky basketball fans have been reminded of that twice on Friday.

One came when a national media member at a Final Four press conference asked Calipari about his first trip to the Final Four. Only one word can describe such a question on the day before the biggest stage in major college basketball: Cheapshot.

Yet, it surprised no one that the fact that Calipari has had two Final Four appearances stripped would come up.
