It is tough enough to win a regional championship in Kentucky basketball. Out of more than 260 high schools only a select few, the “Sweet 16” are fortunate enough to have the combination of basketball skill and luck to make it through five or six win-or-go-home games.  Each game, in theory at least, is a bit tougher than the next.

I can't think of a better basketball day than when it is time for the semi-finals of the regional tournament.

Four teams, all good, all with the same goal, usually gathered in a high school gymnasium not quite equipped to handle a crowd of that magnitude. But they manage that one night a year.

About 40 minutes before tipoff of Tuesday's Eighth Region Tournament game, I asked Anderson County girls' basketball coach Tony Kays if his team was ready to play.

It was a legitimate question as the Lady Bearcats have had a tendency to play to the competition at times and have slacked a little against teams that they are supposed to handle, such as Oldham. To make matters more interesting, Oldham had a team that many thought could be a spoiler in the region.
