  • Kentucky will eventually win the war, but Louisville will take Friday's battle

    Let's get right to the point: Louisville will win this year's edition of nuclear warfare – or maybe after last year, that should be hand-to-hand combat – Kentucky style.

    But Kentucky is the better team with more upside.

    In other words, Louisville will win Friday's battle, but Kentucky will win the war or will be around a bit longer in March.

    Just some observations about this year's edition of the Cats and Cards.

  • 100 years of basketball: Some of Anderson County's greatest coaches

    It might be a stretch to say that Anderson County has been a cradle of basketball coaches, but the county has had its share of people who have had a significant impact on the game. I have listed some coaches who have spent time at a school in the county. Feel free to add more in the comments section.

    Kavanaugh High School
    Earle Jones led the Tigers to a state runner-up finish in 1930. Later, he coached many years at Maysville High School, winning a state title.

  • 100 years of basketball: Some thoughts on your selections for Anderson County's all-time team

    Whenever you embark on a project such as picking an All-Time Team with random persons making the selections, there is one major risk: Will people be fair?
    With over 300 people participating by sending in selections, it was apparent that readers of The Anderson News took things seriously and for the most part, seemed to really be trying to pick those who really were just a notch above all the rest on the hardwood. Sure, there were some people who had large families that stuck together. There's nothing wrong with that and everyone would do the same.

    In this week's edition of The Anderson News, I briefly relived to of the greatest wins in Western High School history, namely when the Eagles eliminated Anderson County from the 30th District tournaments in 1982 and 1983. Biggest wins in Eagle history? Perhaps. But there is no question they are the most memorable to any Eagle fan today.
    So what are the biggest wins in Western history? Records are very spotty and I have been unable to locate everything but these have to be among the biggest.

  • 100 years of basketball: A century of basketball has seen many changes in how The News covers the game

    In researching 100 years of basketball in Anderson County, I relied heavily on five sources of information: My own memory for the years 1970 and forward, oral histories given by different people I interviewed, some extensive research done by local historian extraordinaire Jack Birdwhistell, high school yearbooks at the Anderson Public Library and archived copies of The Anderson News.


    I also browsed some old copies of The Courier-Journal and the Lexington Herald-Leader.

    There are times when it really hits home just how long I have been covering Anderson County sports. We know that basketball has been played in Anderson County for 100 seasons now and, for the most part, I have been writing about the sport for a little over 25 years.


    A quarter of Anderson County's hoops history? That is kind of mind-boggling when you think about it. And I can honestly say there have been few times more enjoyable than those when I had the privilege of writing about Western Eagle basketball from 1986-89.

  • 100 years of basketball: Who was Lincoln Institute?

    For more than two decades, black Anderson County residents were bused to Lincoln Institute, about a mile west of Simpsonville in Shelby County.
    At one time, there was a high school known as Lawrenceburg Colored, which was located on Lincoln Street, according to local resident John Cunningham, whose mother, Gertrude, attended school there. Cunningham says the school burned in the late 1930s or early 1940s. After that, high school students were bused to Lincoln.

  • 100 years of basketball: Anderson County's state champion

    No school in Anderson County has never won a state high school basketball championship recognized by the Kentucky High School Athletic Association.
    However, the girls' basketball team at Lawrenceburg Colored High School was a state champion, according to local realtor John Cunningham.
    The team included Cunningham's mother, Gertrude Bean Cunningham. He says that another member of the team was Mary Harris Gill. Cunningham says that all of the team members are now deceased.
