  • OUTDOORS: Anderson students place high in state archery competition

    Anderson County High School students recently participated in the Kentucky State Indoor Archery Championships, held at Chickasaw Archery Club in Shepherdsville. Frederick won first place in the Youth Female Freestyle Division and was awarded the Jake and Vi Thompson Award for high overall female youth shooter. She scored a 294 out of a possible 300 points.

    Gamble took first place in the Youth Female Bowhunter Division with a score of 260.

  • OUTDOORS: Nash named sportsman of the year

    Anderson County resident Kenny Nash has been named the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Law Enforcement Officers' Sportsman of the Year for District 6.

    The award was voted on by conservation officers from around the 17-county district. It is given to an individual that has stood out during the year, according to a news release. “The individual is someone that purchases hunting and fishing licenses annually, is a landowner, (is) involved in outdoor events and assists conservation officers in their area in any way.”

  • Local taxidermist wins at national competiton

    Imagine being approached by a professional in an area of work you would enjoy doing and being asked to join that professional in a new career direction.

    Justin Tinsley may never have dreamed of such an opportunity, yet he’s kind of living that dream now. Just a year or two ago, Justin was approached by Ed Hancock of Full Fan Taxidermy and was asked if he would like to learn the trade and take on the already successful business Ed had built.

  • New or improving fishing opportunities in 2012

    This coming year presents some new opportunities to catch rainbow trout, blue catfish, redear sunfish, also known as shellcrackers, and white crappie.

  • OUTDOORS: New archery range opens in Madison County

    A new archery range is now open to the public at the Miller Welch-Central Kentucky Wildlife Management Area in Madison County, according to a news release from the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources.

    Constructed on the northern edge of the WMA along Muddy Creek Road, the archery range consists of is a 12-target traditional range and a 30-target course through the woods, said Derek Beard, the department's wildlife coordinator said in the release.

  • OUTDOORS: Winter temps bring float and fly time

    The late Charlie Nuckols owned a tackle shop and lure company in east Tennessee, near South Holston Lake. Winter crappie anglers who fished small marabou jigs deep under bobbers complained to him about big smallmouth breaking off their rigs all of the time.

  • OUTDOORS: Hunters find sandhills challenging during Kentucky's inaugural crane season

    Kentucky's first modern hunting season for sandhill cranes came to a close Jan. 15. The month-long season marked the first time in nearly 100 years that Kentucky sportsmen and sportswomen had the opportunity to hunt sandhill cranes in the Commonwealth. By closing day, hunters had harvested 50 birds, according to a news release.

    Kentucky had allowed for a maximum harvest of 400 sandhill cranes.

  • OUTDOORS: Make firearm safety a priority this the new year

    I guess I’ll start out by piggy-backing off last month’s outdoor column concerning gun safety. I hope everybody had a Merry Christmas and will have a Happy New Year as well as safe.


    Guns can make very exciting gifts to start a new year, however, the responsibilities that come with the gift are tremendous. The giver, and well as the receiver, should understand the responsibility that comes with owning, using or handling firearms.
