  • OUTDOORS: Make firearm safety a priority this the new year

I guess I’ll start out by piggy-backing off last month’s outdoor column concerning gun safety. I hope everybody had a Merry Christmas and will have a Happy New Year as well as safe.

Guns can make very exciting gifts to start a new year, however, the responsibilities that come with the gift are tremendous. The giver, and well as the receiver, should understand the responsibility that comes with owning, using or handling firearms.

  • OUTDOORS: Catch some fish during Christmas break

    By Lee McClellan

Most of us get some time off during the upcoming holidays. With all of the stress surrounding Christmas, what a better way to blow off some steam and get away from work and family obligations than hearing your drag screech from a trophy fish?

Winter is one the most productive trophy fishing times of the year for sauger, striped bass and even largemouth bass from farm ponds if the weather conditions cooperate.

  • Thanksgiving Day opener looks promising for waterfowl season

Excellent breeding conditions this past year in the northern Prairie region and Canada should mean productive hunting for the opening of duck season Thanksgiving Day, according to a news release from the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources,

“Every population of every species but widgeon are holding their own or up big time,”

Brunjes recommends hunters scout potential areas for duck use before setting up to hunt.

    By Art Lander, Jr.

Modern gun season for deer, the highlight of the fall hunting calendar, opens Nov. 12, 2011. Hunters often wonder about rules and regulations concerning deer hunting. Here are some frequently asked questions about Kentucky’s most popular big game hunting season:

Q: Does modern gun season for deer open on Nov. 12 every year?

A: No. It opens statewide on the second Saturday in November. The actual date changes annually due to calendar shift.

  • Fall brings back hunting and fishing memories

Gotta love Fall in Kentucky. It’s here once again. There is one slightly disturbing aspect of this Fall arriving that has me thinking even more than usual.

As I get older it sure seems that the seasons, as well as time in general, just fly by. Add the fact that Hunter is a sophomore at the University of Kentucky and Suzanne is a junior at Anderson County High School and it really gets me to thinking, “Where has time gone?”

  • Fishing good at McNeely Lake

Jefferson County's McNeely Lake is a good destination for canoeists, kayakers and those in small boats because the use of gasoline-powered motors is prohibited.

Located in Okolona, a suburb about 15 miles south of downtown Louisville, the 51-acre, L-shaped impoundment is reached via the Beulah Church Road exit off the Gene Snyder Freeway. Turn right onto Cooper Chapel Road and follow the signs. The lake is located within the 746-acre McNeely Lake Park, operated by the Louisville Metro Parks system.

  • Early muzzleloader deer season held this week Oct. 15-16

The first of two seasons created especially for hunters who want to take deer with muzzleloading firearms is coming up.

Kentucky’s early muzzleloader deer season, which debuted in 1990, will be held this year on the weekend of Oct. 15-16. In the past decade, the muzzleloader deer harvest has averaged 16,272 deer a year. A high of 19,918 was taken during the 2004-05 season, and a low of 13,179 bagged last season.

  • True hunters respect the game, follow the rules

    Hunting.  Fishing.  Outdoors.

What makes a hunter, a fisherman or an outdoorsman?   Practically anyone can take an afternoon drive to the local sporting goods store and purchase a license and equipment needed to pursue any of the activities previously mentioned.  God and soldiers of this great country through the years have given us the freedom to enjoy just such experiences.  However, no amount of equipment or any type of license purchased can truly make a hunter, a fisherman or an outdoorsman.
