  • THE SPORTS BUZZ for May 7: Who...

    Several times during the current baseball season, I have had discussions about the best players to take the diamond in Anderson County history. This sports buzz is simple: Who are the best you have seen?  And who are the best opponent's you have seen?

    From this corner, picking the best Anderson baseball players is difficult. There have been no true superstars to come through Anderson County, although one, Matt McWilliams, appeared to be heading that way until arm problems ended his career.

  • Bearcats drop one spot in latest...

    Anderson County remained in the state's Top 25 in the statewide coaches' poll released on Thursday. Anderson, which made its first ever appearance last week at No. 23, fell one notch into a three-way tie with Christian County and Lafayette. Apollo remains the state's top-ranked team but Lexington Christian, a team that defeated Anderson earlier in the year, is now No. 2 after winning the championship of the All-A Classic.

  • Ethington, Drury power Asbury to...

    The Asbury College softball team won its first Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship, defeating Indiana–Southeast 4-2 on Saturday.

    Playing on their home field in Wilmore, the Eagles won in the program’s first year back after a five-year absence. The Eagles defeated Alice Lloyd 9-0 and Brescia 7-1 on Friday to advance to the championship game on Saturday.

    Asbury (24-12) fought back from an early 1-0 deficit to beat the Grenadiers for the first time this year.

  • Anderson thumps 10th-ranked...

    Anderson County proved that its entry into the state's Top 25 was no fluke Monday night.

    The 23rd-ranked Bearcats built a big lead and rode Jacob Brown's nasty curveball for an 8-4 win at No. 10 Franklin County.

  • COLUMN: Believe it!

    I feel qualified to give some advice for when you hear someone say, “I don’t pay attention to the rankings.”

    The speaker is either a) lying or b) kidding himself.

    Oh, deep down we know the rankings meant little to Villanova playing Georgetown. Barry Larkin, Eric Davis and company knew that Canseco and McGwire had seen nothing like Jose Rijo and the Nasty Boys. And paper was about the width of the opening Calvin Borel took Saturday at Churchill Downs.

    Your brain processes that, certifies it as true and tells you to act accordingly.

  • Hole-in-one is Taylor-made

    No one could blame Taylor Gillis if she was being very noisy at Wild Turkey Trace Golf Course last Wednesday.

    A junior at Anderson County High School, Gillis aced the 131-yard 13th hole during a round with her father. It was the first hole-in-one at the course this year.

    Playing the blue tees, Gillis used a 7-iron for her tee shot. “The ball hit the flag stick on the fly, then went in the hole,” she said. “I began to scream and Dad didn’t really know what to do.”

  • Rain altering Wednesday Bearcat...

    Wednesday's rains have canceled two Anderson County sporting events while coaches are keeping their eyes on the weather concerning other events.

    The Bearcat boys' tennis match with Gallatin County has been canceled.

    The Lady Bearcat softball game with No. 10 Scott County has also been canceled. No makeup date, if any, has been announced.

    The Bearcat freshman baseball game with Oldham County is still on. Anderson head coach L.W. Barnes said a tarp is covering the field and the game should go on if the rain stops.

  • DeLong dominates Rebels

    Kyle DeLong wasn’t overpowering. Owen County just couldn’t hit him Friday night.

    The junior left-hander scattered five hits and struck out nine as homestanding Anderson County routed its regional rival, 9-1.

    DeLong gave up an unearned run in the first, then was in complete control the rest of the way. At one point he retired 10 straight batters and did not issue a walk as he went the distance for the newly-ranked Bearcats.

  • Turpin homers, combines with...

    TAYLORSVILLE -- Courtney Turpin blasted a two-run home run and combined with Lauren Brown on a two-hit shutout as Anderson County bombed host Spencer County, 10-0, Tuesday night. Anderson extended its winning streak to 12 games, but most importantly, capped the top seed in the 30th District Tournament next month.

    The teams endured a rain delay of over two hours, putting the first pitch, set for 6 p.m., back to 8:10.

  • Monday softball canceled,...

    The Anderson County softball game at Woodford County, scheduled for Monday night, has been canceled due to wet grounds. Coach Brian Glass says the game will likely not be made up.

    The Bearcat baseball game at Franklin County is still on but the junior varsity game has been canceled and the varsity first pitch has been moved to 7 p.m.

    The freshman softball game with Ballard has also been canceled.

    The 11th-ranked Lady Cats return to action Wednesday against No. 10 Scott County at the Anderson field. Check back for more updates.
