  • BOYS' BASKETBALL: Somerset...

Somerset, a team that, like Anderson County, is enjoying success a year after struggling, ended the Bearcats' 12-game winning streak with a 60-50 win in the McDonald's Classic at Adair County High School on Saturday.

  • SOCCER: Boys' soccer coach...

(Editor's note: Anderson County High School boys' soccer coach Brett Morris contacted Anderson News sports editor John Herndon about the death of Nick Pezzi, the program's first coach and Morris' high school coach. When asked for some comments, Morris replied with the following note, which has been edited.)

Anderson County High School's first soccer coach, Nick Pezzi, passed away on Thursday, Jan. 5.

  • SOCCER: First Anderson soccer...

Italo “Nick” Pezzi, the first boys' soccer coach at Anderson County High School, passed away last Thursday in Lexington. He was 70.

A native of Italy, Pezzi was pegged to lead the Bearcat soccer program when it was formed in 1988.

Already known in Lexington soccer circles, Pezzi quickly became a beloved figure among soccer enthusiasts in Anderson County.

  • COLUMN: Why they’ll make it; why...

I would like to talk with the person that came up with the phrase, “It’s a long season.”

    Whatever.

  • GIRLS' BASKETBALL: Lady...

Eriel McKee scored 22 points, pulled down 14 rebounds and blocked five shots to lead Anderson County to a much-easier-than-expected 58-32 win over visiting Mercer County in girls' basketball action Tuesday night.

  • Bearcats still unbeaten after...

SHELBYVILLE – Jay Smith banked in a 3-pointer as time expired to give Anderson County a 50-47 win over 30th District rival Collins Friday night.

With the Bearcats having the ball in the backcourt and 1.3 seconds to play, Smith curled around a screen by Spencer Ruggles, took an out-of-bounds pass from Seth Carmichael, then rattled the rim with the game-winner to keep Anderson's improbable season-opening winning streak alive.

  • BOYS' BASKETBALL: Bearcats...

The Anderson County High School boys' basketball team is well represented in the intial statistics report on the 2011-12 season released by the Kentucky High School Athletic Association.

As a team, Anderson is second in scoring margin, behind Bishop Brossart. Anderson is beating teams by 19.8 points a game.

  • GIRLS' BASKETBALL: Lady...

Anderson County jumped on Henry Clay early and never looked back in posting a 61-35 victory Tuesday night at Anderson.

The Lady Bearcats led 21-10 after a quarter, then kept extending the lead for their sixth win in their last seven games. Eriel McKee led Anderson with 23 points, 10 steals, 8 rebounds and 4 assists.

Corrin Robinson added 10 points, eight coming in the first quarter.

  • GIRLS' BASKETBALL: District...

Anderson County has played in a girls' basketball tournament in Florida. The Lady Bearcats have beaten several teams that are considered legitimate contenders or favorites in other regions in the state.

Yet, none of those games will mean as much or are as important as when the Lady Bearcats travel to Collins Friday night. All that's at stake is the top seed in the 30th District Tournament, to be held the last week of February.

  • GIRLS' BASKETBALL: Lady...

HARRODSBURG – Anderson County's girls' basketball team turned in a solid performance, winning three of four games in the Mercer County Lady Titan Christmas Clash, held last week at Mercer County High School.

The Lady Bearcats, playing in a field that contained at least nine teams that are considered contenders in their respective regions, finished third, defeating defending 15th Region champion Sheldon Clark, 65-38, in the third place game Friday night.
