Opening Day festivities for the Anderson County Little League are set for Saturday, April 18 at Legion Park. Activities are scheduled to start at 9 a.m. with a parade of players, with the first pitch slated for 10 a.m.

The pre-game festivities will culminate with the dedication of batting cages named in honor of Allen Dennis, a young baseball player who drowned several years ago.

To Adolph Rupp, Mike Casey was the money man.

To thousands of high school students across the state, he was the class ring man.

But to a kid growing up in the Alton area of Anderson County 40 years ago, Mike Casey was simply the inspiration of a dream.

I can’t say that Mike Casey was my first Wildcat hero. Louie Dampier was filling the nets when I first heard Cawood Ledford say that Rupp’s Runts were moving to the right side of my radio dial.

The storm held off long enough for lightning to strike last Thursday.

And this thunderbolt did the damage in one of the best softball rivalries in Kentucky.

With the bases loaded and two out in the bottom of the second inning, Anderson County’s Courtney Turpin got around on a 3-2 pitch from Shelby County’s Haleigh LeCompte, driving it well over the left-field fence and setting off a wild celebration at home plate.

Jordan Alves just had one of those nights.

And he would love to have nights like last Tuesday’s every time he takes the baseball field.

The Anderson County senior went 3-for-4, hit his first varsity home run, drove in three runs, robbed Nelson County of two scores with a great defensive play, took up ticket money and sold hot dogs.

OK. He didn’t sell tickets or tube steaks but did just about everything else for the Bearcats as they rolled to a 10-0 win over visiting Nelson.
