  • Lady Cats hold off 16th-ranked...

    Courtney Turpin's home run with a runner on highlighted a 4-run third inning that powered 14th-ranked Anderson County past 16th-ranked Louisville Butler Tuesday night at the Anderson field.

    Anderson led 5-0 after three innings but then held on when Butler's bats awakened in the final two innings. Anderson aided the Bears with some poor defense, but still held on for its seventh straight win.

  • Lady Bearcats roll past Shelby

    Anderson County scored twice before Shelby County could record an out on its way to a 6-0 win over the Lady Rockets in high school softball action Thursday night in Shelbyville.

    The Lady Bearcats scored four times in the first inning and reached two Shelby pitchers for 10 hits. Courtney Turpin and Lauren Brown both had three hits for the Lady Bearcats.

    Turpin was also dominant on the mound, scattering five hits. Shelby never seriously threatened as no Lady Rocket advanced past second base.

  • Spencer upsets Bearcats,...

    TAYLORSVILLE -- Spencer County threw a major wrench into the 30th District regular season baseball race Thursday night.

    Spencer's Alex Sorrells belted a 2-run home run in the bottom of the third inning and that was all the Bears needed to upset Anderson County, 3-1 in Taylorsville.

  • Dixon selected to play Down Under

    Anderson County High School senior Cody Dixon has been selected to participate in the Down Under Sports football tournament in July. Dixon’s team, sponsored by International Sports Specialists of North Logan, Utah, will be in Australia for seven days, then return to Hawaii for three more.

    The Down Under Sports program is in its 20th season and boasts alumni such as former NFL quarterback Jake Plummer and running back Ahman Green.

  • Opening Day set for Saturday

    Opening Day festivities for the Anderson County Little League are set for Saturday, April 18 at Legion Park. Activities are scheduled to start at 9 a.m. with a parade of players, with the first pitch slated for 10 a.m.

    The pre-game festivities will culminate with the dedication of batting cages named in honor of Allen Dennis, a young baseball player who drowned several years ago.

  • Renewing an old tradition

    To current members of the Anderson County track team, saying the words “Anderson County” and “traditional track power” are a language as foreign as Russian or Japanese.

    Most weren’t even born when Anderson was one of the state’s top five Class AA programs in the 1980s and early ’90s. And many might not even know that the school’s only state championship came in girls’ track 45 years ago.

    To Adolph Rupp, Mike Casey was the money man.

    To thousands of high school students across the state, he was the class ring man.

    But to a kid growing up in the Alton area of Anderson County 40 years ago, Mike Casey was simply the inspiration of a dream.

    I can’t say that Mike Casey was my first Wildcat hero. Louie Dampier was filling the nets when I first heard Cawood Ledford say that Rupp’s Runts were moving to the right side of my radio dial.

  • Crowning a great career

    C.J. Penny’s place in Anderson County sports history was cemented on the night of March 10 when he swished a 30-foot shot at the buzzer to send the Bearcats to the state tournament for the first time in 12 years.

    Last week, he learned that his career will be crowned as a first-team all-state selection on both the Courier-Journal and Lexington Herald-Leader teams. A senior, Penny is also the first Bearcat so honored in 12 years, when Jonathan Beasley was named to the elite teams.

  • Storms wait but Lady Cat...

    The storm held off long enough for lightning to strike last Thursday.

    And this thunderbolt did the damage in one of the best softball rivalries in Kentucky.

    With the bases loaded and two out in the bottom of the second inning, Anderson County’s Courtney Turpin got around on a 3-2 pitch from Shelby County’s Haleigh LeCompte, driving it well over the left-field fence and setting off a wild celebration at home plate.

  • Former UK star Mike Casey passes...

     

    Updated, Sunday, April 12, 7:30 p.m. Former University of Kentucky basketball star Mike Casey, who was also well-known in Anderson County, died Thursday.

    The Shelbyville Sentinel-News reported Casey's death on its website Thursday.
