  • Williams named all-state punter

    For a guy that did not know he would be playing football until just before start of the season, Sam Williams did just fine.

    A senior who joined the Anderson County High School team for the first time, Williams was named second team all-state punter by the Courier-Journal in the edition published on Christmas day.

    “I was real surprised when I saw my name on the second team,” said Williams, who averaged almost 34 yards a punt on 36 attempts. His longest effort was a 56-yarder in the season-opener at Madison Southern. Williams also put eight punts inside the 20.

    January

    The Anderson County boys’ basketball team wins at 15th-ranked Shelby County. It marks Anderson’s second straight win in Shelbyville, a feat no Anderson team has accomplished since the merger of Shelby County and Shelbyville high schools in the 1975-76 season.

    Anderson County’s Sammy Isaacs is runner-up in the state high school wrestling tournament.... Heartland Christian upsets Christian Academy of Lawrenceburg in the KCSAA state championship game.

  • Friendship on hold

    Beneath the huge crowds, vocal student sections trying to outdo each other, neighbors and relatives talking major league smack and everything else surrounding Saturday’s Anderson County-Shelby County border war is a little reminder that two counties get worked up over a game.

    There’s no question it has evolved into the biggest date on either team’s schedule. The post-season ramifications are enormous and bragging rights might be even bigger.

    But it is still a game. No one knows that better than Brian Stivers.

  • Scott holds off Anderson...

    UPDATED, Monday, Dec. 29, 11:30 p.m.

    MOUNT STERLING – Top-ranked Scott County took the championship of the second annual Gateway Holiday Classic with a 64-49 victory over Anderson County at Montgomery County High School.

    But the Cardinals were in a battle to the end.

    The final score does not indicate how close the battle really was.

    While Scott took the lead for good with a 6-0 spurt to end the first half, the Cardinals did not clinch things until Chad Jackson put back a pair of missed shots that made it 55-47 with 2:00 to play.

  • Montgomery tournament offers...

    The Gateway Holiday Classic might not have the prestige of the King of the Bluegrass when it comes to holiday tournaments, but the 8-team event is already making a name for itself in just its second year of existence.

    Anderson County is just one of several highly-regarded teams that will be playing at Montgomery County High School for tourney, which runs from Saturday, Dec. 27 through Monday, Dec. 29.

    The Bearcats’ first test will be from Francis Howell Central High School of St. Charles, Mo.

  • Ride ‘em, cowboy

    Colt Litkenhus, a seventh-grader at Anderson County Middle School, has been named National Wrangler Rodeo Association Athlete of the Month for January, 2009.

    The award is based on a written essay, references, academics and extra-curricular activities. Litkenhus was selected from a group of cowboys from the United States, Canada and Australia.

    Litkenhus and 12 other award winners are now eligible for a $1,000 college scholarship, to be awarded at the national rodeo finals, scheduled for July, 2009, and to be held in Gallup, N.M.

  • Lady Bearcats blast Caldwell for...

    SHELBYVILLE – Anderson County used a quick start to rout previously unbeaten Caldwell County 53-24 in the championship game of the Max Performance Lady Rocket Invitational tournament at Shelby County High School on Tuesday night.

    Anderson used an 11-1 run to build a 20-6 lead late in the first quarter, then continued to pour it on throughout the contest. The final margin was Anderson's biggest.

    “Our overall focus was excellent,” said Anderson coach Tony Kays. “Our offensive execution and our defense were both good.”

  • Nothing free about ’em

    LOUISVILLE – Free throws?

    For Anderson County, those uncontested shots launched 15 feet from the basket were about as costly as a Blackbery-Wii-Guitar Hero combo during the King of the Bluegrass tournament last week in Louisville.

    A team hitting nearly 65 percent of those simple simple shots heading into one of the nation’s most prestigious tournaments, Anderson sank just 14-of-38 (36.8 percent) in losses to third-ranked Jeffersontown and Bullitt East in the tournament held at Fairdale High School.

  • COLUMN: A short sports wish list

    My wish list is not long, but I really wonder if Santa, or anyone on earth for that matter, can really give me what I want this Christmas.

    I could be cute and offer what I think would be a good wish list for others, but this year, I am going to be selfish. If these four things would just come to pass, I can’t guarantee the world would be a better place – well, number four maybe it would – but I know my job would be a lot easier.

    The recruiting of high school athletes no longer overshadows the game.

  • Free throwing does Bearcats in...

    UPDATED Sunday, Dec. 21, 1:30 a.m.

    LOUISVILLE -- Free throws were simple explanation for Bullitt East's 66-61 win over Anderson County in the King of the Bluegrass Tournament Saturday night at Fairdale High School.

    “They made 'em and we missed 'em,” Anderson coach Glen Drury said.

    The Bearcats made just 9 of 23 foul shots while Bullitt East connected on 29 of 37. The Chargers sank 27 of 34 in the second half.
