  • Need to get to Collins High...

The 30th District championship game will be held at Collins High School, on the west side of Shelbyville, Friday night. It is the first time the 3-year-old school has hosted the district basketball tournament.

  • Sizzling Bearcats burn Shelby in...

SHELBYVILLE – Every game is different, but Austin Cummins might wish things would turn out like they did last Tuesday every time he steps on the basketball court.

A sophomore whose status for the post-season was in question just a few days before, Cummins blistered the nets for 36 points and a school record as Anderson County routed Shelby County, 77-37, in the boys' 30th District semi-final at Collins High School.

  • Lady Bearcats roll on to...

SHELBYVILLE – About the only surprise in Anderson County's 54-26 win over Spencer County in the 30th District semi-final last Tuesday was that the margin wasn't worse.

Anderson controlled the opening tip, got a 3-pointer from Alex Avritt on its first possession and never looked back as the Lady Bearcats claimed their 20th straight win and improved to 28-1.

  • COLUMN: Winning region is...

It might be the most difficult task in team sports.

We're talking about winning a regional high school championship in a one-and-done tournament.

  • BOYS' BASKETBALL: Bearcats...

FRANKFORT – Anderson County can only hope one of the possible reasons for the Bearcats' performance at Franklin County Friday night was correct.

  • BOYS' BASKETBALL: Bearcats...

The trap had been set for Anderson County last Tuesday.

It was Senior Night for Bearcat basketball, a time when emotions can run rampant and get the best of any team.

A starting guard, sophomore Austin Cummins, who had led Anderson in scoring for much of the month of February, used crutches to hobble to the end of the Bearcat bench and stayed there the whole game after a possible knee injury.

  • GIRLS' BASKETBALL: Cann...

Anderson County High School junior Makenzie Cann has been named Eighth Region Player of the Year in voting by the region's coaches.

Cann barely edged her teammate, Eriel McKee, another junior, who was second in the voting.

A 6-foot-1 guard, Cann is averaging 15.5 points, 4.5 assists and 4 rebounds a game for the second-ranked Lady Bearcats. She has scholarship offers from several Division I schools.

Cann is the first girls' player from Anderson County to be named the region's top player in a season.

  • BASKETBALL: District tournament...

The 30th District basketball tournaments were scheduled to get underway Tuesday night after press deadlines. The tournaments are being played at Collins High School in Shelbyville.

The Anderson County girls were to have played Spencer County while the boys' team was to have opened post-season play against Shelby County.
