  • High schoolers on target for...
  • Turner shooters eyeing state meet

    Four students from Robert B. Turner Elementary School have qualified to compete in the state archery tournament, to be held next Tuesday in Louisville. Fifth-grader Isaac Merritt placed second at the regional competition with a 269 score, while classmate Hayden Elder was fourth with a 257.

    Fourth-grader Becky Frederick was fourth in the female competition of her class with a 226, while Adam Steele, another fourth-grader, placed second with a 275.

  • Anderson Invitational is March...

    The 20th annual Anderson County Invitational basketball tournament will be held Friday, March 25 and Saturday, March 26 at Anderson County Middle School.


    The four-team field will feature the Anderson East and Anderson West all-stars along with the Frankfort Stallions, Mt. Sterling Stallions and the Lexington Celtics.


    Tip off is set for Friday night at 6:30 p.m. with two games, then starting again Saturday at 9 a.m. and playing until the tournament is finished.

  • Sports briefs, March 23

    Sportsmen’s Club to host shoot.
    The Anderson County Sportsmen’s Club will be hosting its first shoot of 2011 on Saturday, March 26 at the club facility. Start time will be at 9 a.m. with registration ending at 2 p.m. with all ages, skill levels and equipment welcomed to participate.


    The course will consist of 30 3-D targets.


    The club has added a new elk target and several exotic targets to the course.

  • Baseball alumni game set for...

    Over 40 former Anderson County baseball players are expected to take part in the inaugural Alumni Game, set for Sunday, March 20 at Barnes Field.

    Anderson coach L.W. Barnes said the game will provide a fun atmosphere and give Bearcat fans a chance to see some of the players from the past. Also on the program will be raffles, door prizes, silent auctions, and much more. All proceeds will benefit the Anderson County High School baseball program.

    Recreation Tee Ball and Softball registrations
    From staff reports
    The Anderson County Department of Parks and Recreation will be holding registrations for tee ball and girls' softball on Saturday, March 19 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at Stratton Building in Community Park.
    Tee ball is available for boys and girls, ages 4-6. Softball is available for girls, ages 5 through high school seniors.
    The fee for playing is $60 for the first child in a family and $50 for each additional child.

    WARSAW -- There was no coronation. No celebration. Just stunned looks and tears.

    Anderson County's expected dynasty will have to wait another year or two.

    Walton-Verona's Courtney Sandlin saw to that when she sank a 10-foot jumper with 12 seconds to play giving her team a 40-39 win over defending regional titlist Anderson County in the girls' Eighth Region basketball tournament final at Gallatin County High School.
