  • What happened?

    One indication that Anderson County football is headed in the right direction kept popping up over the last half of the 2008 football season.

    “What happened?”

    A team with lofty goals in the pre-season, Anderson’s dream of playing for a state championship ended in some bone-chilling temperatures Friday. The Bearcats were ousted from the state playoffs by a team that might have flown a bit under the radar for most of the year, but  boasted some ridiculously gifted athletes.

  • Doss holds off Anderson rally,...

    Doss built a big lead then held off an Anderson County rally to post a 49-41 victory in Class 5A football playoff action Friday in Louisville.

    The loss ended Anderson's season at 7-5. Doss moves on to play John Hardin in the Region Two finals on Friday, Nov. 28.

    "I was very proud of our effort," said Anderson coach Mark Peach. "I thought we played as hard as we had all year.

  • Anderson’s Williams...

    Anderson County High School boys’ soccer player Sam Williams has been named an honorable mention selection on the Kentucky Boys’ Soccer Coaches’ Association all-state team.

    A senior, Williams led the Bearcats to a 12-5-4 record and an appearance in the Region 13 tournament. Williams scored 21 goals and had seven assists.

    Saturday, Williams played in the state all-star game at John Hardin High School, near Elizabethtown. Williams scored two of the East team’s four goals and had an assist in the game.

  • Cats prove they are still a force

    It had been billed as the first round of the state playoffs, but for Anderson County, it was more of a proving ground.

    Taking advantage of a rare mismatch for a second-seeded team, the Bearcats routed Louisville Iroquois 47-13 Friday night at Warford Stadium. The box score will show that Jacob Russell and Grant Cox teamed up for four touchdown passes and that Russell threw for 202 yards, 145 of them to Cox. It will also show that the Bearcats outgained Iroquois 371 yards to 226, with over half of the Raiders’ output coming on four plays.

  • Survive and advance the name of...

    Thoughts that came up while thawing and drying out this weekend …

    It isn’t often that a team that doesn’t win its district gets a much needed breather in the first round of the state football playoffs, but Anderson County made the most of that big break Friday night. The Bearcats took control early and got some of the kinks of the program’s first three-game losing streak since 2005 out of their system.

  • Out to tame Dragons

    The second step to a championship is almost always tougher than the first.

    For Anderson County, though, that difference is like adding 100 pounds on the bench press between sets. It’s not an impossible task, but much more difficult.

    After easily dispatching of light-weight Iroquois in the first round of the state Class 5A playoffs last week, the Bearcats travel to Louisville to play District 3 champion Doss. Kickoff is set for Friday, Nov. 21 at 7:30 p.m.

    It will be the first-ever meeting on the football field between the schools.

  • Dillow fights horrid conditions...

    LEXINGTON – Austin Dillow knew that running in the state cross country meet was going to be different but little did he know how much of a change he was in for Saturday at the Kentucky Horse Park.

    Fighting temperatures that plummeted into the 30s, a stinging rain and a slippery course, Dillow turned in a respectable 18:37.13 over the 5K course.

    “I have never run in weather like this,” said Dillow, an Anderson County High School freshman who was competing at the state for the first time.

  • Bearcats roll in playoffs

    UPDATED: Friday, Nov. 14, 10:45 p.m.

    Grant Cox caught four touchdown passes from Jacob Russell to lead host Anderson County to a 47-13 pasting of Louisville Iroquois in the first round of the state Class 5A playoffs Friday night.

    Cox hauled in a 47-yard scoring throw that broke an early 7-7 tie and the Bearcats were never threatened again. "I have to give all the credit to Jacob on the touchdown passes," Cox said. "He just put the ball right in there."

    Cox hauled in five passes for 145 yards. He now has 11 touchdown catches on the season.

  • November surprise

    Practically no one saw this one coming.

    Surely not Anderson County which had beaten Western Hills a combined 67-6 the previous two years.

    And most certainly the Anderson fans, who had a reputation for filling the stands at Hollie Warford Stadium but, for the second straight home date, left many seats vacant.

    Perhaps not even Western Hills, which was reeling from three straight losses and had been fighting through some key injuries.

  • Yeaste named All-State

    Anderson County High School junior Kara Yeaste has been named second-team all-state in voting by the state’s girls’ soccer coaches. Yeaste becomes only the third Anderson player to receive such a high honor.

    Yeaste’s teammate, sophomore Madison Carter was named an honorable mention selection to the all-state team.

    A mid-fielder, Yeaste scored 16 goals and had 14 assists for the Lady Bearcats, who spent much of the year ranked in the state’s Top 20 teams. Yeaste’s field awareness was a major factor in the Lady Bearcats’ success.
