  • Lady Bearcats erase 18-point...

    UPDATED: Sunday, Dec. 21, 1:30 a.m.

    Anderson County overcame an 18-point first half deficit to defeat Henry Clay 55-51 in the first round of the Max Performance Shelby County Lady Rocket Invitational Tournament Saturday in Shelbyville.

    Lindsay Fultz led Anderson with 29 points, while Tiffany Davenport scored 18.

    The Lady Bearcats move on to play Oldham County, a winner over Covington Holy Cross, in the tournament semifinals, set for Monday, Dec. 22 at 8 p.m.

  • Bearcats have consolation at...

    Buried deep in the published tournament bracket, Anderson County's consolation game with host Fairdale on Monday could have been seen as a mere afterthought to the casual high school basketball fan.

    It was anything but that to the Bearcats, who got a measure of redemption with a 45-38 win over the pre-season favorite to win the Sixth Region and some consideration as one of Kentucky's 15 best teams.

    Anderson led at every quarter stop in what coach Glen Drury called his team's “smartest game we have played.”

  • Defense leads Lady Cats to finals

    SHELBYVILLE -- It was fitting that turnovers resulting in Anderson County points formed the parentheses around the second half of the semi-final game of the Lady Rocket Invitational.

    Kara Yeaste swished a short jump shot after the Lady Bearcats forced Oldham County into a 5-second violation on the throw-in to start the second half and Makenzie Stoner’s steal and lay-up with two seconds remaining punctuated Anderson’s 47-37 win Monday night.

  • Lady Bearcats get district win...

    Anderson County overcame a sporadic performance to record a 52-37 win over visiting Spencer County in a key 30th District seeding game Saturday afternoon.

    The Lady Bearcats took the lead for good midway through the first quarter and never looked back, gradually padding their lead to as many as 22 points with four minutes to play.

    Lindsay Fultz paced Anderson, now 3-1 on the year and 1-0 in district play, with 21 points. The Lady Bearcats got a huge lift from reserve Caroline McDowell, who scored a varsity career-high 14.

  • Third-quarter spurt lifts Cats...

    WARSAW – C.J. Penny and Jacob Russell made sure there was no repeat of last March.

    Anderson County’s dynamic duo combined for 43 points and made big play after big play down the stretch as the Bearcats whipped host Gallatin County 66-50 Monday night.

    Penny scored 27 points and grabbed 16 rebounds while Russell had a triple-double with 16 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists to lead Anderson to a bit of revenge on the team that eliminated the Bearcats from the Eighth Region Tournament last year.

  • Anderson rallies to outlast...

    UPDATED Friday, Dec. 12, 10:25 p.m.

    Jacob Russell sank 9 of 12 free throws in the fourth quarter, including two that iced things with 8.2 seconds to play as home-standing Anderson County overcame upset-minded Mercer County 65-62 Friday night. Anderson is now 4-0 on the year.

    Russell finished with 18 points, hitting 14 of 18 free throws. “You just have to try to not think about anything,” Russell said of his approach to the pressure-packed free throws.

  • Acing an early test

    LOUISVILLE – If Anderson County students aced their classroom tests like the Lady Bearcats took care of their exams last week, they would all qualify for full scholarships at Ivy League schools.

    Friday, Anderson was in a totally different league from Ballard, routing the hosts 71-43 in a contest that had all the trappings of a barn-burner.

  • Almost Perfect

    The idea of sending a junior varsity team into action against another program’s varsity is not unheard of at the high school level but chances are that few JV teams have ever had a day like the Anderson County High School dance team had recently at Oldham County.

    “It was the first of the year, and we wanted to see where we would stand,” Anderson captain Casey Harlan says with a huge grin.

  • Bearcats subdue Gallatin

    WARSAW -- Anderson County went on an 8-0 run late in the third quarter, then pulled away to claim a 66-50 win from pesky Gallatin County Monday night.

    C.J. Penny scored 27 points and claimed 16 rebounds while Jacob Russell tallied 16 points and 10 boards to lead the Bearcats. "C.J. played the best defense since he has been here," said Anderson coach Glen Drury.

    Anderson used a crisp passing game to get repeated easy shots. The Bearcats blistered the nets at nearly 73 percent.
