  • COLUMN: A new friend kept me...

I gave my newest friend a name.

    Arnold.

You remember Arnold don’t you? He was that weather-forecasting, lunchbox-toting Wonder Pig from that intellectually-stimulating 60’s classic, Green Acres.

But let’s just say my Arnold was not nearly as lovable as Fred and Doris Ziffel’s, ahem, son. While that Arnold once predicted a snowstorm during warm weather, my Arnold was more into chills after high temperature.

Yep, my Arnold wasn’t an American Yorkshire, but of the H1N1 variety.

  • MatCats romp in duals

Four teams showed up Saturday morning at Anderson County High School to wrestle the MatCats, and four teams went home that afternoon licking their wounds.

The MatCats racked up 36 pins on route to knocking off Montgomery County (62-18), Woodford County (64-6), Boyle County’s A (69-6) and B (53-30) teams and Bourbon County (46-33).

Shea Sparrow (125 pounds) and Blake Curtsinger (130) were dominant, each scoring five pins in five matches on the day.

T.W. Stockton (135) also notched five wins, including four pins, and Zach Perry won five matches on two pins.

  • Russell's muscles lead...

It really would be possible to have a better game than Jacob Russell did Friday night at Mercer County. But you won’t see it very often.

Russell was uncommonly incredible, scoring 27 points, pulling down 20 rebounds and dishing out 10 assists to lead Anderson County to a 70-59 win over the Titans. It was undoubtedly one of the most dominating individual performances at Anderson basketball history.

  • THE SPORTS BUZZ FOR DEC. 16:...

Most Anderson County fans find it strange that I list Shelby County as one of my favorite places to go on the road.

Some think it is because my wife, while not a Shelby County native, almost considers herself from Shelbyville and her uncle, Sam Chandler, was the principal at Shelby County High School for years. Plus, Stephanie teaches at Clear Creek Elementary School and, as many of our readers know, we have lived in Shelbyville since we married over three years ago.

  • THE SPORTS BUZZ for Dec. 10: UK-...

Once upon a time, there was nothing better than that Saturday afternoon (usually) when Kentucky and Indiana got together for the annual border war.

No game, not one, stirred so much emotion, drew so much nationwide attention or meant so much to so many people as the day when UK and IU tipped it off.

Border war? That is putting it mildly. The Russians could have crossed the Ohio River going either way and would have gotten a better reception.

More often than not, from the early 70's to the mid 90's, one or the other was ranked in the Top 5. Sometimes both were.

  • The Sports Buzz: Tuesday's...

I have been around the high school basketball block more times than I care to remember and learned a llllllllooonnnnnnnnnnnnnnnggggg time ago that you can't put a lot of stock in comparative scores.

But they sure do make great talk fodder, don't they?

Take the Anderson County girls' team. The Lady Bearcats won their first two games, an overtime thriller over Lafayette, then an impressive wire-to-wire victory over Ballard.

  • Youth wrestling sign-ups...

Anderson County youth wrestling sign-ups will be held at Anderson County Middle School beginning Sunday, Dec. 13 at 2 p.m. Wrestlers in kindergarten through fifth grade are eligible to participate.

The cost is $60 per wrestler.

Wrestlers will be able to participate in a clinic conducted by Doug Blubaugh, 1960 Olympic gold medalist.

For more information, contact Anderson County High School wrestling coach Tom Castle at 859-489-3794.

  • Lady Bearcats blitz Ballard,...

    Only the cast had changed.

Well, actually, the final margin was also much different than a year ago, but Anderson County used almost the same formula – hit them early and dominate the open court – to defeat visiting Ballard, 60-52, in girls’ gasketball action Saturday afternoon.
