  • Bullitt Central stuns Bearcats

    Bullitt Central used a punishing second half attack and converted three crucial short yardage situations on fourth down to dampen Anderson County's homecoming Friday night, 39-33.

    Bullitt Central rallied from an early 14-0 deficit to take a 21-20 halftime lead, then kept the ball for nearly 16 minutes in the second half. Bullitt Central outgained the Bearcats 296-153 in the final 24 minutes.

  • 'Quality opponent'...

    When Anderson County's 2008 football schedule was announced, there was little doubt about which game would be selected for homecoming.

    Sitting neatly right in the middle of the schedule was Bullitt Central, a team that went 3-8 a year ago and one that the Bearcats whipped 21-7 in Shepherdsville. With only four home games, the Cougars looked to fit the bill very nicely.

    Someone forgot to tell Bullitt Central.

  • Anderson showcased at Marshall...

    If there were any lingering doubts concerning Anderson County's place among the Kentucky girls' soccer elite, the Lady Bearcats answered them with a strong showing in the Marshall County Showcase, held at Benton in far western Kentucky Friday and Saturday.

    The event was not a tournament, as it had been in the past. A decision by the Kentucky High School Athletic Association to rescind some expanded schedules prompted the tournament to adopt a showcase format with some of the best teams in the state squaring off.

  • Gallant upset bid comes up short

    VERSAILLES - Woodford County survived a scare from Anderson County but had enough firepower to post a 3-1 victory in boys' soccer action at Woodford County Park Thursday night.

    The 10th-ranked Yellow Jackets used a relentless attack that was able to overcome Anderson's aggressive play to go 10-1-1 on the year and 5-0 in 25th District play. Anderson fell to 7-3-3 and 3-1 in district action.

  • HIGH SCHOOL GOLF: Gillis, White...

    Anderson County High School golfers Taylor Gillis and Joseph White qualified for the state high school golf tournaments with strong individual performances at the regional meets.

    Gillis qualified for the girls' Region 7 Tournament when she shot an 87 over 18 holes at the regional golf tournament held at Picadome Golf Course in Lexington. Gillis becomes the first Anderson girls' golfer to advance to the state in over 20 years. She is scheduled to tee off at 8:45, Central time, Tuesday in the first round of the state tournament at Bowling Green Country Club.

  • Cats shatter J-town's upset...

    JEFFERSONTOWN - To hear Anderson County football players recount their coaches' halftime speech at Jeffersontown Friday night, one gets the distinct impression of a bit of an understatement.

    "They told us we were going to have to step it up and come out and play our game," senior Kenton Bottoms, invoking the almost universal clich used to describe a team not playing anywhere near its capability.

    "They got on our butts pretty good," smiled team captain B.J. Robinson, another senior.

  • Bearcats stay perfect with win...

    JEFFERSONTOWN -- Anderson County exploded for 20 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to post a 37-14 win at Jeffersontown Friday night. Anderson improved to 4-0, 2-0 in district play. The win also clinched a berth in the state playoffs for the Bearcats.

    J-town fell to 2-1.

    Clinging to a 17-14 lead entering the final 12 minutes, Anderson broke things open when Jacob Russell and B.J. Robinson scored on runs of seven and 18 yards in a 94-second span. Russell added another score midway through the fourth quarter to cap the scoring.

  • GIRLS HIGH SCHOOL SOCCER: Lady...

    Anderson County, ranked 17th in the state, handed Heath its first loss of the season in a 4-2 decision in the Marshall County Invitational Tournament. Anderson is now 11-1-1 on the year, while Heath is 12-1-1.

  • COLUMN: Game cancellation is a...

    Thoughts that popped up while trying to make contingency Friday night plans.

    During the uncertainty that surrounded the eventual postponement of the Anderson County-Jeffersontown football game, I developed an even greater appreciation for those who run the Anderson County school system.

    We don't always agree, but they are right on the money in resisting the misguided urge to make a blanket rule canceling all sports and extra curricular activities when weather causes school to be canceled.

  • An Unsung Hero

    If there is a poster boy for how football has changed over the last 40 years, it has to be Mitch Crawford.

    Standing in at 6-feet and weighing 150 pounds as the quarterback who directed the Anderson County attack in 1968, Crawford would look almost frail compared to current signal caller Jacob Russell's 6-4, 215-pound frame.

    But the size difference is small compared to the game itself.

    "If Coach (Ray) Hager had run a shotgun offense like a lot of teams do today, we could have really put up some numbers," Crawford says.
