    LEXINGTON – Bryan Station jumped to a quick 9-2 lead and never looked back as the Lady Defenders whipped Anderson County 53-45 in the Martin Luther King girls’ basketball classic at Paul L. Dunbar High School on Saturday.

    Collins rode its size and athleticism to a 47-43 win over host Anderson County in a 30th District game on Friday night.

    The Titans forced 16 Anderson turnovers, turning many into easy layups, including a crucial steal by Dee Marshall with Anderson trailing 38-36 and possessing the ball under its own basket with 2:05 to play. Anderson rallied to tie things at 41 with 57.8 seconds left, but Collins freshman Raphael Stone converted a three-point play with 41.3 seconds remaining. Stone had picked up a loose ball, the third Titan shot on the series.

  • Local athlete to play in...

    Jarrod Cubert, an eighth-grader at Anderson County Middle School, has been selected to play in the 2011 Eastbay Youth All-American Bowl on Sunday, Jan. 9. The game will be played at The Alamodome in San Antonio, Tex.

    The contest can be seen via webcasts at www.allamericangames.tv.

    A 6-foot-1, 255-pound lineman, Cubert was selected from among thousands of nominations for the honor of playing in the game, which is patterned after the U.S. Army All-American Bowl, which will be played on Saturday. The younger participants will have VIP access to that game and will be honored at halftime.

    The Anderson County Middle School basketball teams had good showings in the Capital City Classic, held at Elkhorn Middle School last week. The Anderson sixth- and eighth-grade teams took second place in their respective brackets.

    The eighth-graders lost to Frankfort, then defeated Louisville Crosby, Elkhorn and Lexington Traditional to get to the championship game, where they fell to Southern Middle School, of Pulaski County, 35-24. The eighth grade Mustangs are now 13-3 on the year.

  • Harlan County nips Anderson in...

    Harlan County scored on a layup with 4.5 seconds to play in overtime to defeat Anderson County 61-60 in the Sayre Spartan Holiday Classic Thursday night in Lexington.

    Anderson had one final chance when Erik Newton drove the length of the court then passed to Seth Carmichael on a wing but Harlan County blocked the shot.

    Harlan won the round-robin affair with Anderson finishing second. Somerset upset Sayre for third place in the tourney.

  • Holiday hoops tourney update

    Anderson County’s boys’ basketball team rallied from a 5-point deficit going into the fourth quarter to defeat Somerset 44-39 in the Sayre Spartan Classic in Lexington on Wednesday night.

    Anderson trailed for much of the game but took the lead late in the fourth quarter, then held on for its third straight win.

    The Anderson County boys' basketball team pulled a huge upset when the Bearcats defeated Miami (Fla.) Senior, 58-54, in the KFC/Arby's Holiday Classic consolation round at McCreary Central.

    Anderson raced to a 15-point lead early, then made the plays down the stretch after Miami Senior cut the lead to one. No other details were available at press time. The Bearcats also defeated Clearwater (Fla.) Calvary Christian but lost to a pair of Kentucky teams, Wayne County and McCreary Central, in the tournament.
