  • The Total Package

If you want to know what makes Courtney Turpin one of Kentucky's best softball players, don't look at her listing on the roster.

At first glance, the Anderson County pitcher does not conjure up images of Jennie Finch, who, at 6-foot-1, is about five inches taller than Turpin.

Look closer when Turpin takes the pitching circle. Check out the determination as she winds up to unleash one of those 60-plus mile per hour heaters. Take a look at the glare when someone gets a hit, as if she is taking it as a personal affront.

  • LITTLE LEAGUE: Team effort,...

Indians manager Paul Mann went to the mound in the sixth inning to finally pull his son Logan Mann. He had gotten far more production out of Logan in the game than he was expecting, but he could tell he was starting to wear out and the Rockies were picking up on his pitches.

Logan told his dad he was fine. His dad said alright, but was only going to give him two more pitches. The end result was a 79-pitch complete game shutout for a pitcher whose true passion is actually receiving the pitches instead of delivering them, and the Indians got the 2-0 win.

  • LITTLE LEAGUE: Cubs survive 6th...

Dusty Puckett hit another home run and struck out four batters in just over two innings of work, but it was Jordan Adams who came through in the clutch for the Cubs to get the win.

After building a five-run lead entering the sixth inning, the Cubs held off the charging Reds.

With only one out away and men on second and third and the tying run at bat, Adams came in relief and got two consecutive outs to give the Cubs their eighth win of the season.

  • Lady Cats advance to region

Anderson County left little doubt about its approach to the post-season with a 15-0 rout of visiting Eminence in the first round of the 30th District softball tournament on Monday night.

The Lady Bearcats scored three times in both the first and second innings, then ended things with a nine-run outburst in the third, pounding seven hits and taking advantage of four Lady Warrior errors to invoke the “mercy rule.”

“We talked about (getting to the 15-run lead),” said senior first baseman Lauren Brown, who had a pair of hits and two RBI.

  • Hamrick falls, will still play...

FRANKFORT -- The Cinderella run struck midnight for Kristen Hamrick, but there’s still another ball to attend.

Hamrick lost to Franklin County High School’s Sara Kellerman in the Region 8 girls’ tennis championship match 6-1, 7-5. Hamrick, a senior from Anderson County High School, was the region’s seventh seed, and thanks to making it to the regional championship match, will still have a place in the state tournament held in Lexington.

“(Kellerman) played really well, and I did my best,” Hamrick said.

  • COLUMN: Hamrick looks upward to...

To Kristen Hamrick, suffering a loss in the regional championship match really wasn't the end of the world.

She had already been guaranteed a spot in this week's state tennis tournament with an impressive run to the final – think eight sets, six of which were of the 6-0 variety – and advancing farther than any Anderson County girls' player ever has.

  • Bearcats close regular season...

Anderson County wrapped up the regular-season portion of its baseball campaign with a pair of impressive wins, including an 8-4 victory over 18th-ranked Western Hills last Thursday. The Bearcats entered post-season play at 17-11 and appear to be playing their best baseball of the season.

Saturday, the Bearcats got a strong pitching performance from senior Daniel Goodlett as Anderson defeated Woodford County 5-4 in the annual season-ending contest at Versailles.

  • Hamrick advances to regional...

    UPDATED, WEDNESDAY, MAY 19, 10:50 P.M.

Anderson County's Kristen Hamrick played almost flawless tennis to defeat North Oldham's Caitlyn Hickey in the Region 8 girls' tennis regional semifinal on Wednesday. Hamrick moves on to the regional final, continuing an unlikely run through the tournament by winning her second consecutive match against a higher-seeded foe.
