  • Oldham collars Bearcats, wins...

BUCKNER – Oldham County stifled the powerful Anderson County offense for a half, then held on in the closing seconds to defeat Anderson County 10-7 Friday night.

Oldham handed the Bearcats their first loss of the season, but most importantly, won the Class 5A, District 4 championship.

Oldham County's Jake Weigel nailed a 23-yard field goal with 3:06 to play to decide the outcome.

  • Stingy Oldham County shuts down...

BUCKNER – Oldham County should really consider changing its mascot.

Nothing wrong with that genteel Southern Colonel that bears a bit of resemblance to Col. Sanders, mind you. But these guys are more like Col. Patton. Or Col. Schwarzkopf. Or any other military hero on his way to general.

  • Mustangs two steps closer to...

The Anderson County Middle School football team navigated the first two steps in its quest for a state championship last week when the Mustangs defeated Grant County and Lexington Catholic on the field at Anderson County High School.

The Mustangs move on to play the winner of Johnson Central and Rowan County in the state semi-finals on Saturday night, Oct. 31 at Lexington Catholic High School. Game time is 7:30 p.m.

  • No fancy passing in regional...

SHELBYVILLE – When tournament time rolls around, volleyball is just like any other sport.

Then the stakes are the greatest, it is the smallest aspects of the game that make the difference.

Such was the case Wednesday night when Oldham County ended Anderson County's season with a 25-10, 25-17 decision in the semi-finals of the Eighth Region Tournament at Shelby County High School.

Oldham went on to upset North Oldham in the championship game to advance to this week's state tournament, being held at Regents Hall at Northern Kentucky University.

  • District championship on line...

There are your run-of-the-mill big games, then there is Anderson County vs. Oldham County.

Friday night. 7:30 p.m. at Oldham County High School.

And while some would argue it is not the biggest football showdown in Kentucky this week, there is probably no game in the Bluegrass this week that will have more ramifications for the regular season and upcoming playoffs than this one.

  • Champions, finally!

FRANKFORT – As Woodford County's last hope trickled out of bounds with less than 20 seconds to play Saturday, Anderson County coach Jason Earnest tried to mask his emotion.

But there was no way he could. He knew that the most that could happen would be a goal kick to kill the clock.

Earnest sported that smile of satisfaction. He clinched his fist.

A district championship had been a long time coming and a victory over Woodford County even longer.

  • Lady Bearcats are soccer...

Anderson County built a 2-0 lead, then hung on to defeat Woodford County, 2-1, in the District 25 championship game Saturday afternoon. The tournament was held at Sower Soccer Complex in Frankfort.

"This is amazing," said Anderson junior Madison Carter.

Laura Drury gave the Lady Bearcats a 1-0 lead with 9:54 to go in the first half, then Taylor Clark added a goal with an assist from Kara Yeaste with 24 minutes to play.
