  • Bluegrass Beasts lift heavy...

    The last time Adam Garrett was making his rounds on the Anderson County sports scene, he was batting leadoff, taking an extra base by diving head-first and playing a mean shortstop for Anderson County High School.

    Six years later, Garrett is different. He's thicker and the sport now is the North American Strongman.

    Garrett, who went on to play baseball at the University of the Cumberlands, entered his first strongman competition Saturday in the Beast of the Bluegrass at Eagle Lake Convention Center.

  • Big swings, no hits

    One swing was all it took.

    One swing to show that Anderson County was not overlooking 30th District rival Eminence last Wednesday.

    Actually, one pitch was all that was needed as Courtney Turpin sent Brenna Raisor's first offering of the game over the left field fence for a home run. It was all the offense the Lady Bearcats would need, but they went on to a 13-0 victory and snapped a 3-game losing streak.

  • Burkhead, Hart lead Bearcats to...

    TAYLORSVILLE -- Aaron Burkhead kept a powerful Shelby County lineup off balance with an assortment of off-speed pitches and pinpoint control to lead Anderson County to an 8-3 victory in the 30th District baseball tournament championship game Wednesday night at Spencer County High School.

    Burkhead was less than 13 months removed from Tommy John surgery on his elbow to record the biggest win of his career. Burkhead worked five innings, giving up 2 runs on 4 hits. The senior righthander struck out 5. Sophomore lefty Kyle DeLong worked two innings to finish things off.

  • Anderson boys third in CKC meet

    LEXINGTON - When Cody Dixon got set to run the 100-meter dash, he knew the real race was for second place.

    "He's fast," the Anderson County junior smiled as he talked about Frankfort's E.J. Fields, who won the event in 11.36 seconds.

    But Dixon was able to burn some rubber too, finishing second in the Central Kentucky Conference meet held Friday at Henry Clay High School.

  • Anderson registers 'needed...

    The smiles and sighs might have been all the interview needed Tuesday night.

    They were silent, yet shouted, "We needed this one."

    Anderson County rallied from an early five-run deficit to post an 8-6 victory over visiting Scott County on the Bearcats' Senior Night. But perhaps more important than giving their seniors a win in their final home game, the victory snapped Anderson's four-game losing streak.

    "This was a big win," Anderson coach L.W. Barnes said with a major emphasis on "big."

    Connie Gilbert can only blame herself.

    Those nights of long trips, early mornings seeing her husband sending e-mails long before dawn and donning every hat from janitor to schedule-maker to newspaper columnist can all be traced back to that night in the mid-1990s when she was waving her arm and spoke up about his availability.

    It happened at an open forum to explore the feasibility of opening a Christian school in Lawrenceburg.

  • Four qualify for state track...

    Six members of the Anderson County boys' track team have qualified for the state Class AAA meet to be held in Louisville May 30 and 31.

    High jumper Jordan Sloan took first place at the regional meet Tuesday at Henry Clay High School in Lexington. Sloan cleared 6-feet and is expected to be one of the better jumpers at the state.

    Devin Davenport just held off Henry Clay's Blake Green in the 400-meter dash. Both finished at 50.59, but Davenport was awarded second place.

  • Lady Bearcats win district in 9-...

    The match-up between 11th-ranked Anderson County and no. 19 Shelby County proved to be everything it was supposed to be.

    And more.

    Two innings more, to be exact.

    Anderson's Caitlyn Royalty raced home on Miranda Drury's ground out in the top of the ninth inning for the game's only run and the championship of the 30th District Tournament Tuesday night at Spencer County High School.

    It was Anderson's first district crown since winning back-to-back titles in 2002 and 2003.

  • Baseball Bearcats advance to...

    Jeremy Turpin homered in the bottom of the first inning, then Luke Hawkins went yard in the fourth powering Anderson County to a 7-1 win over Spencer County in the opening game of the 30th District baseball tournament Tuesday night.

    While the game was played on Spencer's home field, Anderson was the home team due to its higher seeding.

    "I knew it was gone as soon as it left my bat," a smiling Hawkins said of his first varsity home run.

    Anderson, now 17-15, moves on to play Shelby County in the district championship game, Wednesday, May 21 at Spencer. Game time is 5:45 p.m.

  • Lady Bearcats crush Spencer in...

    It took a while, but when Anderson County zeroed in, the Lady Bearcats put on a demonstration of their firepower in Monday's 30th District opener at Taylorsville.

    Anderson routed host Spencer County 15-0 in four innings to advance to Tuesday's championship game against Shelby County, which demolished Eminence in the first game.

    Anderson, ranked 11th in the state, and Shelby, ranked 19th, have played four times already this year, with each team winning twice. Game time is 7 p.m., Tuesday, May 20.
