SHELBYVILLE - The scorecard indicated Shelby County had put up a decisive girls' tennis victory over Anderson County Thursday afternoon. The Lady Rockets won four of the five varsity matches in straight sets, including a pair of 6-0 scores and three more that went 6-1.

But this was one time that the scorecard did not tell all of the story, according to Anderson coach Catina Sims. "The last time, they beat us 5-0," she said. "Today, we won at no. 1 doubles and some of the matches were very close."

Now, Anderson County can get that state tournament talk out again.

Just 3 days after a performance that left some, including their coaches and perhaps themselves, questioning whether or not they had the mettle to make a serious run at an Eighth Region championship, the Anderson County softball team's answer came through loud and clear Saturday night with a championship of the Capital City Showcase tournament, held at Frankfort's Lakeview Park.

The Anderson County High School boys' track team finished third in the Danville All-Comers' meet held last Tuesday at Admiral Stadium in Danville. Anderson placed well despite not running some of the Bearcats' top performers in some events as coach Travis Gay elected to give some younger team members the opportunity to compete.

High jumper Jordan Sloan continued to show why he is ranked as one of Kentucky's best with a victory. Sloan cleared the bar at 6-feet. Discus thrower and shot putter John Updike was also impressive, placing second in both events.

SHELBYVILLE - It was everything a match-up of two regional contenders would be expected to be.

Shelby County's Jordan Burk settled down after shaky start to outduel Anderson County's Ryan Pike as the Rockets took a 3-0 victory in a much-anticipated 30th District showdown last Thursday. An overflow crowd saw the region's top two teams, according to the pre-season coaches' poll, battle with every pitch, every swing and every catch counting.
