It's the time of year for resolutions that make us feel good for a few days after making them, but lie in the junk heap of our actions by Valentine's Day.

  • OUTDOORS: Winter Prize

Reagan Jennings, 13, took this big 10-point buck in Anderson County on Dec. 28 during the free youth hunt weekend.

  • Bearcats upset Collins, Lady...

Real rivalry games are those where you really can expect the unexpected.

Anderson County showed Friday night that it has a new rival – a real one, at that – in Collins High School. The Bearcat boys' basketball team pulled off a shocker while the Lady Bearcats methodically dispatched Collins in the opener.

  • ONLINE EXTRA: Bearcats to host...

When Collins visits Anderson County for a high school basketball double-header on Friday night, it will be a night to see the early favorites for the Eighth Region championship being tested against a pair of teams that could be dangerous spoilers.

While the local high school has designated the night as one to reach out to the community and showcase students, most eyes will be directed to the basketball court.

  • Bearcats to boost school,...

Anderson County's biggest home basketball game of the year might turn into one of the high school's biggest nights of the year.

  • SPORTS BRIEFS for Jan. 2, 2013

    Holiday tournament news online

Because of early holiday deadlines, results from Anderson County basketball teams playing in late Christmas tournaments will not appear in this edition of The Anderson News.

The Lady Bearcats were one of the favorites to win the Capitol City Holiday Classic at Franklin County, which started last Thursday. The Lady Bearcats picked up two impressive wins that day, including a 69-33 pasting of defending state champion DuPont Manual.

  • FOOTBALL: Anderson football...

Anderson County High School juniors Ross Cox and Darius Harvey were named honorable mention selections on The Courier-Journal all-state football team.

The prestigious team, selected by the state's coaches, was announced on Christmas Day.

Cox was listed as a wide receiver. He caught 51 passes for 1,153 yards and 13 touchdowns.

  • COLUMN: Local fans hope it will...

For years, we have known that the number “13” is unlucky. Many buildings don't have a 13th floor. Ball players – Wilt Chamberlain, A-Rod, Marino and Concepcion are some notable exceptions – avoid the number like it is an injury waiting to happen.

    But what about 2013?

  • Top sports stories of 2012 range...

Trying to come up with a list of the top Anderson County sports stories of 2012 is not an easy proposition for several reasons.

First, the county is, for the most part, only home to scholastic sports. Second, no Anderson County team had a mega-season, as had been the case every year since 2007, when at least one local team vastly exceeded expectations or earned a berth in the Kentucky state tournament.

    Or both.

The year that ended Monday was one that saw a lot of Anderson County teams have very good years, but not the eye-poppers to remember.

  • Bearcat wrestlers medal at...

Seven Anderson County wrestlers medaled in the prestigious Lafayette Invitational, held on Dec. 22 in Lexington.

Cody Dillow split four bouts to place fifth at 152 pounds, the highest-ranking Anderson wrestler in the tournament. Among Dillow's wins were pins over wrestlers from Male and Moore.

Dillon Harrod split four bouts to finish sixth in the tournament. He triumphed in one of the closest bouts of the day, winning a 3-2 decision over a wrestler from Henry Clay.
