  • First game foe 'formidable...

On paper, it would not look like Anderson County's football team would have a routine opener to get the kinks out at Garrard County.

But Bearcat coach Mark Peach is quick to point out that Garrard's 4-7 record last year has nothing to do with what will go down Friday. Game time is 7:30 p.m.

“I saw them scrimmage (Class 6A foe) Madison Central,” Peach says. “They gave Madison Central all they wanted. They will be a formidable opponent.”

  • COLUMN: Are the expectations...

It did not take long to get thawed out from that night at Doss High School last Nov. 21.

That night, temperatures were in the 20s and wind chills were in the single digits as the Louisville team ended Anderson County's season 49-41.

  • Lady Bearcats shooting for...

    It finally happened last fall.

Anderson County's Taylor Gillis qualified for the state golf tournament, the first Anderson golfer to do so since the girls' team was organized seven years ago.

The current Lady Bearcats are hoping to ride some of Gillis' coattails, mixed in with the good fortune of having the regional tournament on their home course at Wild Turkey Trace, to join Gillis at the state tournament in Bowling Green.

Anderson coach Lynn Gritton says it will be difficult but his team knows it is possible to advance, just like their teammate.

  • Referee of the Year!

Kate Wickizer, a junior at Anderson County High School, has been named the female winner of the EuroSport Young Referee of the Year award as given by the Kentucky Youth Soccer Association. She was selected for her impact on the local community and across the state of Kentucky.

Wickizer represented the state for the Region II Olympic Development Program in DeKalb, Ill.

Wickizer was selected after being nominated by Daniel Rogers, former head of officials for the Anderson Independent Youth Soccer Association.

  • Lady Bearcats learning new...

There is little doubt that 2008 will go down as one of the benchmark years in Anderson County volleyball history.

The Lady Bearcats finished 19-13, claimed a win over Scott County, swept a very good Henry County team, and after faltering in the District 28 championship game, rebounded to win the first regional match in the program's history.

Moments after the team's final match, a regional semi-final loss to eventual champion North Oldham, there was a quick transition to looking ahead. After all, nearly everyone that played was expected to return.

  • THE SPORTS BUZZ for Aug. 15:...

It is sometimes extremely hard to get a read on a football team in a scrimmage setting but it was clear on Friday night that Anderson County has the potential to be a very special football team in 2009. The Bearcats dominated Lincoln County in every way possible and it could have been worse than it was. Scores are not kept in such scrimmages, but this one was played in game conditions. About the only differences from real game situations were some extra protections against kick returners and no defensive rush on extra point attempts.

Just catching up on a few things as fall sports are getting into full swing....

First, the Anderson County volleyball game at Cornerstone Christian, scheduled for Monday night, Aug. 17, has been canceled. Cornerstone also canceled the return match set for later in the season at Anderson and has apparently canceled the boys' basketball game set for this fall, according to Anderson athletic director Rick Sallee.

  • Directions to Lincoln County...

Here are directions to Lincoln County High School for the Anderson County vs. Lincoln County football scrimmage on Friday, Aug. 14
