    NEW CASTLE - It will be some time, if ever, before the questions concerning Anderson County's first-round exit from the boys' Eighth Region basketball tournament will subside.

    What happened that caused a team that had been unbeaten against regional foes all year, suddenly go down in the season's two biggest games?

    What if some of those breaks that went against the Bearcats down the stretch of their first-round loss had seen the ball bounce the other way?

    Boos cascaded down from the stands Friday night at Rupp Arena after Lawrenceburg's Brandon Yocum was "robbed" in his quest for the American Fight League's amateur middleweight crown.

    Yocum, who appeared to dominate Brian Keller of Charlotte, N.C., lost a split decision by the judges.

    "I'm still trying to get over that," said his trainer, Brad Briscoe, a physical therapist from Lawrenceburg who also judges fights for the organization. "I was shocked."

    SHELBYVILLE - If anything, Anderson County might have set its clock ahead by more than an hour Saturday night.

    That's how ready the Lady Bearcats were for the semi-final round of the Eighth Region Tournament Sunday afternoon.

    After two postponements because of the weekend's snow, Anderson quickly jumped on Walton-Verona, then delivered the knockout punch in the third quarter for a 76-48 romp at Shelby County High School.

    SHELBYVILLE-- Simon Kenton's Jessica Farris came up with a steal and converted a three-point play with 1:08 to play, putting Simon Kenton ahead to stay in the girls' Eighth Region championship game played at Shelby County High School Monday night.

    Simon Kenton connected on 4 of 6 free throws in the final 32.6 seconds to take a 48-44 victory for the school's first Sweet 16 trip.

    SHELBYVILLE -- Anderson County went on a 24-11 scoring spree in the third quarter to fuel a 76-48 win over Walton-Verona in the girls' Eighth Region tournament semi-finals Sunday afternoon at Shelby County High School.

    Anderson advanced to the regional championship game for the first time since 1978. Anderson will play Simon Kenton for the right to represent the Eighth Region in the girls' Sweet 16. The championship game will tip off at 7 p.m. Monday, March 10 at Shelby County.

  • Girls' Eighth Region...

    Because of the winter storm moving into the area, the girls' Eighth Region semifinal round, originally scheduled for Friday, March 7, has been postponed for a second time.

    The semifinals are now set for Sunday afternoon, March 9, with the championship game to be played Monday night, March 10.

    The revised schedule is

    Sunday, March 9

    Walton-Verona vs. Anderson County, 3 p.m.

    Simon Kenton vs. South Oldham, 4:45.p.m.

    Monday, March 10

    Championship game, 7 p.m.

    Fans are also reminded that Daylight Savings Time begins Sunday.

  • Gallatin ends Bearcat dream

    NEW CASTLE -- Gallatin County ended Anderson County's Sweet 16 dream with a 63-56 win in the first round of the boys' Eighth Region tournament Thursday night at Henry County High School.

    In a game that was tied at the half, Anderson opened a 32-25 lead midway through the third quarter, but Gallatin's Taylor Jones buried back-to-back 3-pointers to pull his team within 34-31. Jones later made a sensational flip just before the end of the third quarter to tie things.

  • Girls Eighth Region Tournament...

    Anderson County will play Walton-Verona in the semi-finals of the girls' Eighth Region basketball tournament after the Lady Bearcats defeated Owen County in the first round of the tournament. Walton-Verona advanced with an upset win over Oldham County.

    Simon Kenton defeated Carroll County and South Oldham upset defending regional champion Shelby County in other first round games.

  • Rockets shoot down Bearcats

    Shelby County was on a mission Saturday night.

    The Rockets might have felt their 30-year stranglehold on 30th District supremacy slipping away and were determined to do something about it.

    Mission accomplished.

    The Rockets went on a 16-0 run in the first 2:48 of the second quarter to stun top-seeded Anderson County 73-61 in the district tournament final before an overflow crowd at Spencer County High School.

  • Boys face Gallatin in regional...

    Anderson County's quest for a Sweet 16 berth faces a major hurdle in the opening round of the Eighth Region Tournament. The Bearcats will play 31st District champion Gallatin County on Thursday, March 6, at 6:30 p.m.

    All tournament games will be held at Henry County High School in New Castle.

    Although Anderson stumbled in the 30th District championship game, losing to Shelby County 73-61, Kentucky's postseason rules allow district winners and runners-up to advance to the regional tournament.
