  • Journalism, fandom a difficult...

As I jumped in my seat along press row during Saturday's 30th District Tournament championship game, I was reminded of the words legendary Kentucky basketball announcer Cawood Ledford said to me more than 20 years ago: You cannot cover a team and be around it all the time without wanting that team to win.

  • Lady Bearcats turn back Owen in...

Tony Kays' speech was short and to the point.

His Anderson County girls' basketball team saw a 13-point lead sliced to just one as his team gathered after the third quarter of its 53-38 first-round victory in the Eighth Region tournament.

"I told them it was a one-quarter season now and I didn't think they were ready for the season to end just yet," he said.

The Lady Bearcats responded by scoring the first 11 points of the fourth quarter, turning a precarious lead into an insurmountable 45-33 cushion with less than 3 minutes to play.

  • Girls Eighth Region Tournament...

Anderson County outscored Owen County 19-5 in the fourth quarter to score a 53-38 win in the first round of the Eighth Region Tournament Monday.

Lindsay Fultz led Anderson with 22 points while Courtney Milam added 13.

Anderson will play Walton-Verona in Friday's semi-finals. Walton-Verona pulled an upset in beating Oldham County 55-47 in Monday's other first round game.

  • Shelby whips Bearcats for boys...

TAYLORSVILLE -- Shelby County used a 16-0 run to start the second quarter and defeated Anderson County 73-61 for the boys' 30th District basketball championship Saturday night at Spencer County High School.

Leading 8-7 after a quarter, Anderson suddenly disintegrated as Shelby's pressure defense forced turnovers near mid-court and the Bearcats missed countless easy shots. By halftime, Shelby had doubled the score at 34-17 and was well on its way to avenging losses in last year's district final and in the 2007-08 regular season.

  • Boys Eighth Region pairings...

Anderson County will play Gallatin County in the first round of the Eighth Region Tournament Thursday, March 6, at Henry County High School. Game time is 6:30 p.m.

The Bearcats defeated Gallatin 68-59 just before Christmas but both are slightly different teams in March.

The contest will match two of the contenders for the Eighth Region championship in what figures to be the marquee game of the opening round. Gallatin and Anderson are the two winningest teams in the region in 2007-08.

  • Girls Eighth Region Tournament...

Anderson County will play 31st District champion Owen County in the opening round of the Eighth Region Tournament, Monday, March 3 at Shelby County High School. Game time is 7:45 p.m.

Anderson has not played Owen this season but figures to be a strong favorite despite falling in the 30th District championship game.

  • Some tickets available for boys...

A limited number of tickets are available for the boys' 30th District basketball tournament championship game Saturday, March 1.

Anderson County will be defending its 30th District championship against arch-rival Shelby County. Anderson won the teams' regular-season meeting, 60-53, on Jan. 4 at Shelby County.

Anderson returned "about 50" of its 500-ticket allotment to host Spencer County High School, according to principal Ray Woodyard.

Tickets are $5 each and are expected to go on sale an hour before tipoff, which is set for 7 p.m.

  • Shelby outlasts Lady Bearcats in...

TAYLORSVILLE -- Shelby County hit 6 of 9 free throws in overtime to outlast Anderson County 53-47 in the 30th District Tournament championship game Friday night at Spencer County High School.

Shelby's Raechele Gray, who has signed with Marshall, scored 26 points including a 3-pointer midway through the extra frame that gave Shelby a 47-43 lead and put the Lady Rockets in firm control.

    Anderson would never get closer.

  • Lady Cats embark on quest for...

Anderson County will be embarking on the journey that it hopes will produce the Lady Bearcats' first Sweet 16 berth in 30 years tonight, Wednesday, Feb. 27 in the first round of the 30th District tournament.

Anderson will be expected to move past host Spencer County for a date with defending district and regional champion Shelby County in the district final Friday, Feb. 29. All district tournament games are set to tip off at 7 p.m.
