 ‘Prayer in Action Days’

The Kentucky Council of Churches is hosting Prayer in Action Days at the State Capitol each Tuesday during the General Assembly to pray for government officials and act on behalf of Kentucky’s most vulnerable citizens, the organization announced.

A kick-off event was held Jan. 9 in the Capitol Rotunda. Subsequent gatherings, listed below, will begin at 9:30 a.m. in the Capitol Annex.

Jan. 16: Justice Reform

Jan. 23: Tax Reform

Jan. 30: Healthcare/Disabilities

Feb. 6: Workers’ Rights/Fair Wages

Feb. 13: Environment/Energy

Feb. 20: Gun Violence

Feb. 27: Smoke-Free Tomorrow

March 6: Death Penalty

March 20: Responsible Lending

In a news release, the council said it was “pleased” with the participation at the events last year, and was encouraged to do it again in 2018.

Participants come from all over the commonwealth to pray together, learn about issues, and visit their legislators, they said.

The Kentucky Council of Churches chose these issues based on policy statements approved by all 11 of the council’s denominational members. The membership includes Protestant and Roman Catholic congregations. The council works with other state advocacy groups and coalitions on issues of mutual interests.

“We have several organizations and union groups who partner with us to provide information to our constituency,” organizers said, “and many of their members attend the Prayer in Action events because they want to be a part of what we are trying to do.”

All Prayer in Action events are interfaith and open to the public and media. For more information contact the Kentucky Council of Churches at KCC@kycouncilofchurches.org, 859-269-7715, or visit www.kycouncilofchurches.org.
