Homeschool numbers swell as public school enrollment falters

Enrollment in Anderson County’s public schools continues to plummet.

Since the 2008-09 school year, the number of children attending public school has fallen from 3,867 to 3,593, a decline of 274 students — the equivalent of what is now a full grade.

School officials say a variety of factors are driving shrinking enrollment, including the skyrocketing number of people choosing to homeschool their children.

Since 2011, the number of homeschooled students has jumped from 132 to 281, a 113 percent increase that figures to continue to grow.
