Favorite player taught life lesson being one of the best

Color of jersey, not skin, all that matters in games we play

By John Herndon

It was back in 1964 when I fell in love with baseball.

It always has been, probably always will be my favorite sport.

When I discovered the “Game of the Week,” announcers Dizzy Dean and his podnuh Pee Wee Reese, I also learned that the team closest to my Anderson County home, the Cincinnati Reds, had a guy suiting up with the coolest name I had ever heard.

Vada Pinson.

The man could hit and do so with power. He could steal bases and when roaming center field, he seemed to just glide to the ball.
