• Woman run over, dragged after being pushed from vehicle

    A Lawrenceburg man faces attempted murder and other charges after police say he tried to kill a woman Sunday night in western Anderson County.
    Leslie “Scott” Hatchett, 40, of 2309 Ballard Road allegedly pushed a woman out of his vehicle before running her over, police said.

    The winners of the 2014 District Spelling Bee have been named, the school district announced.

    The top four winners from grades fourth through eighth will next compete in the Anderson County District Spell-off next month to determine the overall top speller in Anderson County, who will move on to compete at the Kentucky Derby Festival State Spelling Bee in March.

    Second place: Carson Azzinaro, Ward

    Thirteen Kentucky teachers, including two who live in Anderson County, received the Northern Kentucky University Trailblazer Award for Mathematics Education during a presentation Dec. 4 at the Embassy Suites Lexington.

    Receiving the awards were Chrystal Rowland, a resident of Lawrenceburg who teaches at Robert B. Turner Elementary, and Lawrenceburg resident Stephanie Herndon, who teaches at Clear Creek Elementary in Shelby County.

    Winter Festival set at Saffell Elementary

    Looking for a place to sing some Christmas carols?

    The choirs at Saffell Street Elementary School are scheduled to perform during the school’s Winter Festival on Dec. 9, followed by a community sing-a-long during which everyone is welcome to join them in singing Christmas and holiday songs.

    “This is [a] festive way to come together and ring in the holiday season,” said Meredith Lewis, coordinator and music teacher at the school.

    Robert B. Turner Elementary held its annual spelling bee Nov. 19, according to a news release.

    The top three winners will go on to compete in the District Spelling Bee Dec.4 and Dec. 5 at the Anderson County Board of Education building, located on US 127 Bypass, according to a news release.

    The annual event will begin each day at 8:15 a.m., according to a news release.

    Eighth grade students in Ginger Warren’s Anderson County Middle School Arts and Humanities class brought popular Shakespearean works to the stage during the Shakespeare Festival last Thursday.

    The student run performances were part of a semester-long class where students study theater elements, dance cultures and dance traditions.
