  • GIRLS' REGIONAL PREVIEW: Lady Bearcats continue quest for Sweet 16

It is now down to three games for the Anderson County girls' basketball team.

Three Eighth Region Tournament games to put an exclamation point on a historic season or to have a bitter ending.

  • OUTDOORS: Now is the time to enjoy a bit of what is to come

It is a typical Kentucky February as I write this month’s column. It is actually sunny and 60 degrees, windy and feels more like early April with spring turkey season coming on. I just spent the last hour or so checking game cameras and walking some fence rows in search of antler sheds. The weather feels great today but by “typical Kentucky February” I mean things will change weather wise.

  • Penny named All-KIAC at Asbury

Coaches in the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference have named Lawrenceburg resident C.J. Penny to the All-KIAC team, according to a news release.

A freshman at Asbury University, Penny joined the Eagle team after the first semester, scoring 15.8 points and pulling down 6.9 rebounds per game. Penny is shooting 55 percent from the floor, according to the release.

  • GIRLS' BASKETBALL: Never a doubt as Lady Bearcats roll to fifth straight district crown

SHELBYVILLE – There was never any doubt that the Anderson County Lady Bearcats would win their fifth consecutive 30th District championship Friday night.

Anderson never trailed in a 47-34 win over tourney host Collins, a convincing win over a team Anderson had routed by a combined 59 points that was expected.

The manner in which the second-ranked Lady Bearcats went about their business was not.

Layups rolled off the rim. Normally easy shots rattled around the basket before popping out. The Lady Bearcats hit only 4-of-11 free throws.

  • Drury, Smith receive regional honors

Anderson County High School boys' basketball coach Glen Drury was named the Eighth Region's Coach of the Year by the region's coaches while senior Jay Smith has been named to the All-Eighth Region team.

Smith is the only Anderson player on the 15-man team. Through the 30th District Tournament, Smith was averaging 17.0 points, 6.9 rebounds and 4.7 assists per game.

“There is no doubt we are not where we are without Jay Smith,” Drury said.

  • COLUMN: Bearcat Den a true Sixth Man

They claim to be loud. And rowdy.

But in the spirit of journalistic accuracy we have to dispute that.

The Anderson County student section is LOUD. And ROWDY.

And in a season that has seen the Bearcat basketball teams go a combined 51-5 and counting, they've been a bit of a sixth man.

“Best student section in the state,” is how they want to be known.

  • BOYS' BASKETBALL: Talented Titans get sweet revenge on Bearcats in district final

SHELBYVILLE – It is said that you can't beat Mother Nature. At least you can't beat her twice. Especially in her house and on her own terms.

Anderson County learned that hard lesson Friday night when Collins, defending its home court, ripped the Bearcats 63-51 in the 30th District basketball tournament championship game, avenging Anderson’s 55-43 win back on Jan. 4.

It was a repeat of a year ago, when Collins avenged Anderson's regular-season win with a district title.

  • BOYS' BASKETBALL: Bearcats escape Owen in regional opener

Anderson County held off a determined Owen County team, 50-47, in the first round of the boys' Eighth Region Tournament at Henry County High School Monday night.

  • Bearcats draw Owen in regional opener; Lady Bearcats to play Grant

The Anderson County boys' basketball team team will play Owen County, Monday, Feb. 25 at 8 p.m. in the first round of the Eighth Region Tournament at Henry County High School.

Anderson defeated Owen, 62-50, on Feb. 7 at Owen County. That broke a three-game losing streak to the Rebels, including the first round opener of last year's regional tournament.

The Eighth Region field is wide open with nearly every team making the tournament given a chance of advancing.
