  • ‘Stupidity’ evident in Obamacare, Middle East

    To the editor:
The dictionary defines stupidity as slow to learn or lacking intelligence. Practical applications of both definitions can be observed in the outcomes of the U.S. Congress and the White House. Salient examples abound.

  • Bikers more than meets the eye

    To the editor:
Cruising down I-75 this past Tuesday, motorists gave a double take as they witnessed Hoss Cartwright breezing down the Interstate on his POW MIA Harley trike with a shower chair strapped to the passenger seat.
Hoss, a highly decorated Vietnam vet and member of the Vietnam Vets Motorcycle Club (VNVMC) was escorted by Ed Peirce, also a Vietnam Vet, and member of the Second Brigade Motorcycle Club (SBMC) as well as Joanne Hunter, a Marine Corps Nurse Vet. They were headed to Berea to offer aid to a veteran brother with a broken leg.

  • Sign ordinance has major, minor flaws

Column as I see ’em …
It’s a shame that after years of effort and no small amount of compromise the new sign ordinance being proposed by the Anderson County Chamber of Commerce does absolutely nothing to fix the current ordinance’s fatal flaw.
Not that the chamber could do a thing about that flaw, which is simply that two zoning boards of adjustments — one city, one county — can override the ordinance at will by granting waivers.

  • Believe in golden rule: reduce, reuse and recycle

Wow! There’s only two more Saturdays in August and a realization just dawned on me.
For the last decade or so I have run my produce stand from Memorial Day to Labor Day. That’s my idea of summer. After Labor Day, I switch over to tutoring on Saturdays. So, besides the holiday breaks I’m always working, off the farm, six days a week. This year is going to be different.

  • Summer salad packs healthy punch

The summer corn and couscous salad was a favorite at the Anderson County Senior Center. This week I’ll prepare it for “Taking Ownership of Your Diabetes.”
Corn is low fat; saturated fat free; sodium free; cholesterol free and good source of vitamin C. Corn is a good source of fiber and B vitamins, with 90 calories in a half cup serving.

  • Bluegrass Pipeline will be important part of Kentucky’s future

    By James Scheel
    and Allen Kirkley
Williams and Boardwalk Pipeline Partners, LP
Learning that a new underground pipeline may be coming through Kentucky has some folks asking questions.
What are the risks? What about my land? What about the environmental impact? These are just a few things Kentuckians have a right to know about the proposed Bluegrass Pipeline Project.

  • Documenting the county in 24 hours

I must be insane to be standing here, taking a photo of the courthouse at 12:45 a.m.
Let’s be clear here: I am not a night owl.
The night, even last Saturday night with its sleepy August cricket chirps and lingering smoke of dinner barbecues, does not appeal to me.
You will not find me conscious at midnight, sitting outside on a porch on a warm summer night to contemplate life after all the lights have been snuffed out except for the moon.
I like sleep. I love sleep.

  • Know the rules before purchasing a vehicle

Planning to buying a vehicle soon? If so, please be careful. We have seen an increase in problems that buyers are experiencing.
Here are a few things that you need to watch for when buying a vehicle.
    Buying from an individual
Is the person selling the vehicle the same person listed as the owner on the title? Ask for ID. Is the title the current one? Our office can verify this. Don’t accept the vehicle if not.
