  • Currens' eye-black has it

Kaci Currens' dark brown eyes widened as the pitch made its way into the sweet spot of her swing.

A high school softball game that Anderson County had seemingly been in control of twice was now a 12-inning marathon to determine the Eighth Region champion.

The Anderson County sophomore unleashed her bat and connected with a pitch from Oldham County's Kristen Smith.

  • First round opponent a mystery...

About all Anderson County knows about Johnson Central is that the eastern Kentucky school will be the opponent in the first round of the state high school softball tournament Thursday evening in Owensboro.

  • ONLINE ONLY: Curry blasts Walton...

WARSAW, Ky. – If any boats were heading up the Ohio River during last week's Eighth Region high school softball tournament, a warning might have been in order when Bailey Curry stepped to the plate.

The Anderson County freshman put charges in a pair of home runs that might have threatened traffic on the mighty Ohio, about three blocks from the field at Gallatin County High School, but certainly propelled the Lady Bearcats to an 8-0 romp past Walton-Verona in the tournament semifinals Wednesday of last week.

  • Lady Bearcats are are state...

WARSAW, Ky. – The only question was whether or not Kaci Currens' line shot would be high enough.

The Anderson County High School sophomore had punished an offering from Oldham County's Kristen Smith. At the Lady Bearcats' home field, it would have been a no-doubter, but at Gallatin County High School, with roughly the same dimensions but a 10-foot-high fence, it was not clear.

  • Diamond or diploma?

Imagine having to decide between two once-in-a-lifetime opportunities.

    Two of them.

Make that two once-in-a-lifetime events going on at the same time.

It is a choice facing Molly Burkhead and Madison Brummett Thursday night. They are the only seniors on the Anderson County High School softball team, which is scheduled to play its first round game at the state tournament at 6 p.m. in Owensboro.

  • ONLINE ONLY: Late rally sends...

Anderson County erupted for four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning on its way to a 5-1 win over Carroll County in the Eighth Region Baseball Tournament semifinals, held at Henry County High School Wednesday of last week.

The Bearcats send nine batters to the plate as they finally got to Carroll County pitcher Zakk Adams, who had limited the Bearcats to a run and one hit through five innings.

  • Simon Kenton ends Bearcat...

Simon Kenton's Tristen Marcum smacked a bases-loaded single to propel the Pioneers to a 3-1 win over Anderson County in the ninth inning of the Eighth Region championship game Thursday night at Henry County High School.

The Anderson offense could not solve Simon Kenton ace Sean Lawrence, who struck out 15 Bearcats. Anderson did have the winning run at the plate in the bottom of the inning but were unable to get the big hit.
